COLONIAL STORES HONORED FOR PROMOTION OF NORTH CAROLINA FOOD
PRODUCTS Colonial Store* has been named top chain retailer ol the year in service to the
people ol North Carolina through promotion and sale ol North Carolina products. The honor was
announced by Governor Terry Sanlord, right, at a dinner in Raleigh Tuesday night, November

A similar award for promotion of
home grown products in a single
store went to Baxter C. Shelton of
Table Supply. Kannapolis.
In presenting tha awards,
Ooverner Sanford stressed the
liapsrtanei at food puttering
to the economy at North Caro
lina and predicted that the state
will sesame national leadership
in this field within the next
decade.
In accepting the award Mr. Tuttle
said:
“Our company is indeed proud to
be singled out for this recognition.
We have always felt that promotion
of the economy of North Carolina
through sale of home grown and
processed product* ia a vital re
sponsibility of a company such as
ours, and we pledge to the people
of the state our continued efforts
toward making North Carolina the
most dynamic economic force in
America.”
"Colonial Store* will spend over
63 million dollars on North Caro
lina products and services this
year,” Mr. Tuttle said. *
The largest single expendi
ture by Colonial is for North
Carolina products for sale Hi
the chain's 438 supermarkets
located in It southern and mid
western states. The total this
year will be more than IZ mil
lion dollars.
Next in line, is more than 8 mil
lion dollars which goes to pay
wages and salaries to Colonial’s
3000 North Carolina employees.
Other expenditures include li
censes and taxes, approximately
$368,000; rents. 11,300,000; utilities,
1000,000 and miscellaneous supplies,
31.100.000.
Colonial will spend nearly SBOO.-
000 on advertising with North Car
olina newspapers, radio and tele
vision stations.
Currently. Colonial operates

olina. A division office and
major distribution center are
located In Raleigh and a bakery
