As we take this attitude toward overy experience, we are able to let go of negative and unhappy thoughts and reap the greatest a mount of benefit from living. God has endowed each one of us with certain abilities and certain talents, and most certainly He ex pects us to make use of these bless ings. And the best way in which we can make use of these abiliti&s and gifts is to put them to work immediately when our way is be set by seeming difficulties and problems—knowing all the time that God is with us and that there is a rich blessing for us in the situ ation at hand. We can emerge from these experiences with greater spiritual stature or we can be dwarfed spiritually. It is up to each one of us. MATTHEWS Mrs. Mabel McCauley Matthews of 122 W. South Street, died Tues day evening of last week Funeral services were held Friday after noon at 3 o'clock from St Paul AME Church with the Rev. B. S. Faust, pastor, officiating. She Is survived by one sister. Miss Rachel H. G. MCauley and several nieces and nephews. Burial was in Mount Hope Cenw- 9 cause they are weak. Most of them are strong-willed people. They drink because they feel compelled to do so. When they feel this need, family, friends and job mean very little to them. ARE DRUNKENNESS AND AL COHOLISM THE SAMS THING? No. The man who got drunk at the Labor Day party may never have the desire to drink again. The alcoholic feels a compulsion to drink and will continue to, even though he may realize that it is jeopardizing his job, family and friends. Thompson CHRISTMAS PROGRAM PRESENTED O. Wednesday, the Ist and 2nd grade class of Mrs. O. L. Hickerson presented their chapel program. The theme of the program whs “Christmas.” The program was divided Into three parts. First was the recitation of “A Christmas Acrostic,” by Jer ry Dunn. Karen Peppers, Martel la Blackman, Linda Golatx, Alvin Dunn, Russell Davenport, Leow Blango, Cynthia Branch and Paul Branch. “A Christmas Message," by Sandra Alford. Carolyn Mitchell, and Brenda Williams, followed by the singing 'of, “Away in a Manger" by the entire class. Second was the presentation of a short play called, "Gift* for the King.” Characters In the play were William Chavis, Kenneth Dickens, Steven Washington, Louis Archlble, Clarence Hester, Otis MiaL Sheran Blalock, Jessie Gibbs, Daniel Pow ell, Otha Rowland as shepherds; and Mozelle Brodie, Sandra Alford, Carolyn Mitchell, Brenda Williams, Virginia Whitaker and Roaalyn Sanford as angels. The third part of the program consisted of a Rythym band, made up of the entire class. The band played two numbers, "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" and “Jingle Bells." This program was presented a gain to parents and friends at the Thompson Schools’ P. T. A. meet ing on Thursday night. Mesdames Gracie Mitchell, Lu cille Dunn, Rosanna Sanford, Shir ley Rowland and Shirley Washing ton attended this assembly pro gram. vrrwM ukaukrs rmcHKNT CHRISTMAS PROGRAM Mrs. Yvonne Tatum Lindsay’s fifth graders presented their assem bly program prior to the close of school for Christmas. The play en titled. “Christmas In Court," was a comedy concerning the Trills and fripperies” of Christmas. The characters of the play were portrayed by the following girls and boys: Clarence Grimes, police officer; Cynthia Adams, holly; Debra Dunn, Ivy; Chandra Lockley, Mrs. Steekle; Debra Fryer, Mistletoe; Edward Winston, judge; Coetell Oates, Christmas; the jury, mem bers of the class, and the chorus, member* of the class. Before presenting the play, the class gave the audience a thought ful look at the other and most beautiful side of Christmas with the reading of the Gospel accord ing to St Matthew, 1:18-15 and 2:1- IS by Toni Hall and James Doe. The chorus sang songs such as “O Coma, O Come Emanuel," “The First Noel" and "Silent Night" There were many visitors pres ent who enjoyed the program a long with the school family. Among those present were: Mr*. Mayola Winston, P. T. A. president. Mrs. Sarah Hall, past president of the P. T. A, Mrs Gertrude Smith. Chairman of Grade Mothers, Mrs. S. B. Adams, Henry Grimes, Mr. and Mrs. C. Lucas, Evangeline Barnes, Mrs. Ola Tyson, Mrs. Tex anna Lucas, Mrs. Rnellc Hines, John Barnes. Mrs. Rosanna San ford. Mrs. Katie Griroas, and Mrs. Geraldine Newby. Funeral service for Mr. Chester White Bryant of 1112 S. East Street, who died Tuesday were conducted from the Raleigh Funeral Home chapel at 2 p. m. Sunday with the Rev. B. S. Foust officiating.
