The new pension bill that
has passed increases the to
tal pension to $ 750,000,000.
What is our country coming
to? Twenty-five years ago
the war closed, and to-day
the pension has increased
nearly double to what it was
under the Grant administra
tion. Can our country en
dure such a strain? Think
of where we are drifting.
Sam P. Jones closed his
meeting at Charlotte on the

in money. About 8,
000 was for the purpose of
paying off the Y. M. C. A. in
the city. The balance Rev
Sam kept for incidental ex
pences. Money moves every
thing. Preaching, in many
respects, as well as politics
are run by money. The
preacher ought to be paid e
nough. if he is the right sort.
Ham P. is uot our kind, for
we don't like his style. II is
rough and uncouth language
in the pulpit does not ace rd
with our views. Our idea is
that a preacher of the gospel
ought to refrain from coarse
foolish jokes in the pulpit.
But many others differ with
us, and we will not fall out
witn them about it. Jones
is a great success ingettinga
large crowd to-gether and
raising lots t)f money. It is
not for us to say how inucl.
spiritual good he does, for vvc
don't know.
There is always some ex

course, down this rugged
mountain, till it empties into
the sparkling waters of Meet
Camp. It laughs, and sings,
and dunces on its way, ma
king music quite merrily.
Here it makes a beautiful fall
as it plunges over a ledge of
rock, and then' murmers a
long between the most-y
banks, almost hidden by
ferns and leave?.
The writer, in company
with several others, once en
joyed a day very much in tra
cing this madly wild brook
let in its crazy course. Imag
ination instinctively went
back to the time when the
red man of the forest wander
ed on its mossy banks, and
of the dusky Indian maidens
who roamed as free as the
birds on this rugged moun
tain side, and drank of this
sparkling beverage, but they
roam no more. The white
man came, and with him
greed of gain. He felled her
lovely forests, and dug into
her rugged bosom, in search
of hidden treasures, to -increase
his wealth. All! all is
changed. If some of the old
warriors who sleep could re
visit this huge sentinel, they
would find but one thing by
which to remember the hap
