The Watauga Democrat, I u i !l. It. Dousht-rljr, IJit.ir. K C. Khi-rx, TuIilNher A IkMh it TH" f: in i! v iiews l;t r devoted tothc bitco stsof Count v. State and Nation, l'ult-M-Jiiil ccry Thursday at Boone. Watauga County, N.C. llmrsdav I eh. L'Gth, .' Mr. Cleveland has thrown j a bomb into the ramps ofj democracy all over thecoun-j try, by his opposition to thcj fm? coinge silver bill. 1 he country was not prepared for this, for the democrats and some of the western republi cans were struggling in Con gress to have this bill passed the present session, anil it is claimed that Mr. Cleveland's h tter has greatly obstructed the prospects of the bill. He may be lit in his views. There was not a doubt but lie would have received the nomination of the democrat ic party for President in 'Y2, nnd his election was almost assured, but now the matter stands in great doubt and it is very probable that he will be eliminated from the race. Mr. Cleveland must have known .he effect of his letter, nnd it looks like he was in the same strain of mind that the immortal Clay was in when he declared he ''would rather be right than Presi dent." It is hard to tell what changes may come over the minds of the American peo ple on the silver question in the next eighteen months, as the country is now very much divided on this financial ques tion. This division is not con fined to any particular par ty, for both the democratic and republican parties nredi vided on this question, but the alliance-men aredemnnd ing the free coinage of silver; especially in the w e s t e rn states. Many of the demo crats in Congress have advo cated this measure in thepres ent session, and are commit ted to it in the strongest pos sible way. It is an issne in North Carolina, and favored by the democrats and alli ancemen alike. But if Cleve land has, by his letter, placed himself out of the presiden tial race, the dmocrats have many good, available men for the presidency: Byard, Carlisle, Gorman, Pattison, Morrison, Campbelle andoth ers would make available can did a res. We have been for Cleveland ngainst the world, and are still anxious to see him in the White House again, but we must not run a man with clogs on. We have no fears but that everything will work out satisfactory and that some good democrat will be elected in 1892. Tt is gratifying to read of the pffieient labors of Char ley McKesson of Morganton, in the Fife meeting atStates ville. Mr. McKesson is now a consecrated man in the gos pel ministry. What a great change has come over Char ley. May he live long and do great good in his new field and serve his generation in re claiming lost men from their downward course. The Illinois legislature is still in the dead lock, and have failed to elect a Senator. Gen. J i Our legislature has amend-; iil the charier of theAtlanta,' Ashevilh and Baltimore rail-; road company, but we don't! know in what way. This is. the road in which Watauga county is much interested. j The legislature has passed the rail-road Commission bill I by a large majority, a iid'.iowj there is a great scramble who; shall be appointed commis-j sioners. i The center of population of the United'States is ascer tained by the census to be in Southern 'ndiana. near (Ireensburg, Decatur county. The western democratic papers are going for Mi. Cleveland's scalp. A dost ructive hreat Wades boro North Carolina is re ported. Col. L. L. Polk thinks Mr. Cleveland "a political back number." The bill authorizing wom en to vote in Kansas has passed. The repupHcins carried Philadelphia by 40,000 ma jority. Our legislature has been in session -BJ days. Zionville, N. C, Feb., 23, 1WH. Editor Democrat: As I suppose the people a re anxious to hear the latest news lrom the Kentuckians, I will give the latest repoit to date. On the 10th they left Forge Creek, Tenn., and started toward Va. On Tues day, while going down the Laurel, they met a man with a jug of whiskey, and deman ded it, and the man resisted, and they shot him. It is thought he will die. From there, they went into Virgin ia, and some parties stole three horses, and to-day it is reported that there were two men put in Abingdon jail on the 20th inst. The Virgin ians followed the crowd and overtook them (three in num ber), shut one and arrested the other two. I am not in formed whether or not the wounded man l-asuknl. j Well.
