It is claimed that it can he done cheaper with the proper ar mn;enjents with trained of ficials, and that the work can be done with more accuracy and dispatch. The proposi tion is to keep up the statis tic ot the country to date and to enable the officials to obtain facts and figures per taining to the growth of the country, at any time. No doubt this change will be for the better, as the condition of tilt country can be report eci at any time, nnd perhaps a more reliable census can be obtained. Mb. Roby Kstes and sister, of Blowing Book, attended the wedding nnd supper at Dr. Councill's and told ns that their fathpr. I,. W. I tea, waa preparing to more went in April. Bobj h a s spont some time in the west, and is anxious to return, as are all the members of the family. We dislike very much to give up such good people, but people will continue to go West. North and East, and others will still come South. A general mixture of population may be for the bet. If prosperity ever o vertakes this country again, we would be pleased to abide here through life. Every thing is dull and motionless now, but we hope fortha bet ter. We will try it a few years longer, and then we will be too old to go West, kIk.uI 1 we live. If the Legislature wants to do the fair thing, we mean the democrats of courwe, Edi tor A -, of th News and Observer, would be appoint ed State printer without op position' We think we know munethmg of the effective work the Nensjwi Ouserrer did d u ri ng t he cam pa ign . The printing ought to have been let to Mr. Ashe two years a go, and nov it is more appa rent that he deserves it. We hope th legislature will do the fair and square thing in this matter. The democrats in North Carolina appreciate Editor Ashe and claim for him a manly recognition by the legislature. j ml I i!!'V til g'MHl IHI1 iMdinl i. mi t build a to' v in tl)ii rout!- tv. In the next campaign they will be republicans or the republi cans will tie third party men. It is evident now that they have been courting for some time and a marriage will take place -the day may be set. The only question now is, which party will be the groom ? The two Mouses of Con gress assembled on the 8th inst., in the hnll of the House of Representatives to hear the vote of the Presidential electors announced. The Vice President announced t h a t Cleveland nnd Stevenson had received 277 votes; Harrison tnd Reid 14a; Weaver and Fields, 122, making in all 4-41 elect oral votes. Cleveland has 1 10 majority over Harrison and Weaver, or 87 more votes than was necessary to elect him. Juixn: V'. B. Allen, popu list, was elected U. S. Sena tor by the Nebraska Legisla ture; all the democratic mem bers voting solidly for him. This was a heavy blow on the republieuns. Mr. Allen made a brief speech in which he promised conservative ac tion. It is presumed that lie will net with the democrats on most of the political is sues. Thekeis no new Cabinet to report this week. It ap pears that Cleveland has an art to keep his own counsel about his Cabinet until he chooses to annonnce them, t'arlisle is the onlv sute one known to the public. The 4th dav of March will reveal the Cabinet, and they will be able and suitable men. Cleve land don't want any other kind. He has no pets. All legislative bodies inert up with much business of a privute and local charucture. There has been no definite conclusion in regard to any changes intheschool law, the homestead law, the working of public roflds, general ap propriations, rail toad tax matters, and other leading measures, but the various committees are at work on them and will report them in due time no doubt, lfali the changes in te code are made that is demanded by the various members, there will he very little of the code remaining, The World's Fair appro priation bill for $40,000 was ii mended oy Capt.Lovill and ?2.").(!00 was substituted and adopted, ayes 88 nays 10 on second reading. The biP pass ed its third reading DO a.vrs 10 nays. The Senate passed the (log tax law, the House vo'ed it down. The Wilmington and Weldon rail road tax mat ter is occupying a gre t deal of tifne.thisisaback tax ;nnt ter, it is claimed that tin road o w e 8 $130,000 buck taxes. While the rail road company elaim that 20,000 is all that is due and are wil ling to pay that sum, the company claims protection under their charter in regard to back taxes. This is a big t hing just now for the legisla ture to "monkey" with. If the legislature taxes the entire franchises of all the rail roads it will mid many more millions of taxable pro-' pet ty to thestate. And why not rail roads pay taxes 011 all the property ah same as u farmer or a merchant? Many of the news paper thatscored Blaine politically and other wise, while he was living, now sound his praise and noble qualities, much as to say that Mr. Blnin was a bad fellow while a live but wheu dead he is a very great man. From thisit ap peared that a man's virtues and noble qualities are not recognised until he is dead and buried. When e man passes over the river he is harmless and the living fear him no longer.
