His nomi nation for Judge in this Dist. was consid'-ml a certainty from til-.1 outset, for such in tellect as is psssessed hy him cannot easily he suppiessed. His principle opponent was Jjdge Ilynum, an able man, a very efficient Judge and has made a State reputation on the Bench. It was an impossibility for he W.l-on bill to pass ami become a law owing to the object ion of the Republicans and four or five Uemoeratie Senators who fought every plan to get the House bill through the Semite. He sees his way clear that the Democratic party is the party that can and will have free silver. General Weaver was run b the Populists two years ago for President on the silver question He is now the Democratic nominee for Con gress in his district in the State of Lowa. Men change. "But k" Kitchen the cyclone of North Carolina Demo cracy has gone partley over to the Populist on account of his opposition o Presi dent Cleveland and General Weaver sroes hack to the Democratic party and if el H't ed to Congress will he a great strength to bring tihout the legislation to restore tree sil ver. Our people are deter mined to have free silver and it restored on a basis ot gold. There is nothing more cer tain than this, hut every thing a? this kind of legisla tion tnkes time and woik. Silver was demonetized h y the Republicans in 1873 and money has 'been getting scarcer every year. We must have silver put hack where the fathers placed it. There is now movements going on to start up the Three C's R. R. and it is now thought that work to corn- plete the road will soon he commenced. We also see signs of the late defunct boom in Fast lennessee be- intr started up again. There has been some interested Railroad parties from Chica go through this county look ing after the prospects of a railroad from Lenoir through this county on to Tennessee. Hodges made a ringing speeeli to ilie convention and s a i d he would stand for his claims as long as his ''riends desir ed, laiue'd that he was the choice of the district accord ing to the counties instruc tions to the delegates. We hope that Ilodu'-s has been successful and has the nomi nation and of '-ourse will tie elected. .lake Hodges is a man of brain, and excellent campaigner and an un flinch ing Democrat. The Third Party of North Carolina has issued an ad dress to the voters of the State. It deals largely a gainst the elect on laws, and contains the usual denuncia tions of the State laws that the people ha ve been accus tomed to he.'ir from the Ite- publicans for lo these many years. A tree leiiiof ami a fair count" cone s up again as fresh as ever the same old humbug cry tliatwehave heard for the hist fifteen or twenty years from theiepub licans of the Stae. it seems that Butler & Co. have horn anew those old Republican denunciations o;d havechan ged some of them into their own phraseology. They will answer the same purpose that thev formerly did. The old Republican slandar of the people of the State will not avail them any strength. The people have heard this song before. The gold standard is prov ing national disaster where ever it has Ihen adopted. About 21 years ng') the Re publican party ii. Congress deuionotized silver. This action caused a financial crises at the time, hut cur countiy recuperated from it to some extent, but all ad mit that there has not been a sufficient supply of money to do the business of the country. Silver a s a com mercial money has (ailed us owing to vicious legislation. Congress has been unxiov.s ic restoresilvcr, hut the IVesi dent sayr. wait for an inter national agreement and we don't know how or what is best about this waiting. We believe that the United States ought to act at once in the matter. Senator Ransom lias suc ceeded in getting River ap propi iations for North Caro lina amounting to $314,500. Our uncle Mat. has dune welt for N. C. as he always does. Still many of the Democrats want, to chop off his political head because he voted to re peat the Sherman "make shift" bill. It is reported that Sjt(.. tary Carlisle will resign on account of his difference with the President on the finan cial quest Mil and that W. L Wilson of West Virginia will take his place. It isnow evident that there will be no more tariff legisla tion this session. Congress will soon adjourn and go home intake in the coining campaign.
