Swcretarv Carlinle was the first witness ip the bdnd in vestigation which was today began by a sub-committee of he Senate committee on fi nance. It is uncertain at this time how long it will take to complete the investigation. Senator Harris presides over hecommittee (netting, which is public. It would seem in view of the extent of the silver discussion hat everybody would know exactly-the statae of silver money under our present laws, out.in a discussion by n group of public men, it was quickly shown that a major ity of trjem didn t know. A majority of the group con tended that silver was riot a legal tender in sums exceed ing 810 and it required t h e production of a copy of the Revised Statutes of the Uni ted States to convince them to the contrary. The act of 1873, generully spoken o! as the demonitizutiooM)f silver, dropped the silver dollar en tirelv from our coinsand pro vided that the "silver coins of the Uriited States shall be a legal tender at their norm nal value for any amount not exceeding $5 in any one payment, "nut this part o the aci was suspended five yearn later, Feb, 27lh, '78, by the Hlandact, which , pro vided for the coinage of our present silver dollars, and provided further that they "tocetlier with all silver dol lars heretofore coined by the United States, of like weigh and fineness shrill be a lega tender at their nominal vii no for all debts and dues, pub lh and private, except where otherwise expressly' stipula ted in the contract' This is the law. Silver. dollars ar e today a legal tender in any amount for any indebted ness, not stipulated to be paid in some other certain kind of money, and if this fact were known to four gen tlemen in public life it is not unreasonable to s u p p o s e that it is jnknown to thous ands of private citizens. The ;ac of 1890, which provides that silver coins of less than one dollar shall be legal ten der in all sums not exceeding ten dollars, is probably re sponsible for the prevalence of the idea that the silverdol lars are only a legal tender to that amount. As a mat ter of f'ict the silver coins of less than one dollar are full legal tender to ten dollars no matter what sort of a con tract may have been madeas to payment jn other money. If it reo aired an annual outlay of $100.00 to insure a family against, any .serious consequences from an attacK of bowel cotnpiaint during the year there are many who would feel it their duty to pay it; that they could not h fiord to risk their lives, and those of their family for such an amount. Any one can get this iusurance for 25 cents, that being the price of a bot tle of Chamberlain's Colic. Cholera and Diarrhoea Rem edy. In almost every neigh borhood some one lias died from an attack of bowel com plaint before medicine could be procured or a physician summoned. Under a pile of bedding, and surrounded by the dead and dving, ihey found him. He appeared to be unconscious, and they tenderlv raised him and bore him from the scene. Just as they were placing him on a cot he aroused himself and irently breathed the name "Mary." Poor fellow," said some one, "he is thinking about his wife." His next remark knocked this in the head, however. "Marv " he veiled: ,4what the devil do you mean? When I asked vou foi fried eggs I did not expect them boiled. ' When anger reigns mercy dies. The 1 ife spea ks loudest when the tongue isoumb. God is pnt as close to us in the dark as he is in the sunshine. Whoever takes one step to ward the devil will bae to! take two. : " If we hold on to sit) for a day, we may have to hold on to it forever. Make your life a ministry of love, and God will make it a success. Wantingto do right will a- mount to little, unless wede cide to do it. The man who walks by faith is in no hurry for God to explain himself. Whenever the devil is p bout to strike to kill he puts on his Sunday coat. . v The mission of Christ was aot to 'teach theology, but to reveal God. It is not those who have the best opportunities who make the best use of them. When n sinner compares: himself with a hyprocnte, it doesn't make his sin any sa fer. The man who is not leli gious at borne often tries hard to be so considered in church. No matter what appcaranj ces may be, the road God tells us to take is always the best. Whenever the clock ticks. it brings the tiro) nearer when the door of mercy will shut. There are not many mill ionaires alive today whom angels do not consider poor men. Strip Satan of the finerobe that hides hiscloven foot aud he would not be dangerous. Our great sins do nnt con sist so much in the things we do, as in those we neglect to do. Whenever God gives a cross to bear, it is prophecy that he will also give us strength. The man who is in earnest about saving his soul will be in earnest about everything he does. If God answered all prayers just as they are made, the earth would soon return to chaos. As soon as a man is con victed of sin, he is convicted that he cannot bejsnved with out God's help. It takes some men a long time to find out that they can never become rich b y keeping all they get. This world is full of green pastures that have been pre pared expressly for the Lord's sheep.
