hd Watauga Democrat A Democratic; (a.nily newspaper! djlTOtd 1 to the illtoi-est Of CoUH tr State ano Nation. Published rrjr rnursua.v at isoone, wa toga County. N.C. A great num.; .years ago the old fashioned back coun try housekeeper learned that when she had any work to do that vinvolved a great deal of standing on her feet in one place she was the gain er by folding a piece o car pet or a rug and placing it on the floor under her feet. It has .taken the business men u long time to learn just what a great mi.ny of the grandmothers and auntiesof this world knew very long ago namely, that people who star.d in one place for any length of time would save a great portion of their foot and leg weaiiness if they arranged for something soft on the floor, One sensible man spread a thick coating of tn bark on the floor of his warehouse; another used sawdust and found it a great deal advantage. Where these substances onnnotbein troduced with safety or con venience a light platform of rather thin boards for the men to stand on Inks been found a great value in the saving of strength. In offic es where men are constantly on their feet thick manilla matting is helpu' in avoid ing that extreme, weariness 1o which active people are subject. Wearing loose shoes with thick insole of felt is recommended when floors are extremely hard and unyield ing. A little attention to some of what appear to be the minor details of hie will "oftentimes repay the pains taking eirployer in increased usefnlnes and the ability to accomplish agreateramount of labor. New York Ledger. How to Teach a Child. Parents and teachers can often keep children from tell ing falsehoods to conceal sins or faults, by a little pa tience and judicious manage ment. It is not best to offer a premium for lies by holding out no higns of lenience to the wayward. The w i s e course is to help the- children out of trouble caused by wrongdoing by gently point, ing out to them the way of honorable reformation. When a child gets farenougli in sin to feel the need of a falsehood to help it out of the unpleasant predicament, it would usually come out by a more honorable way if it could be made to see the bet ter route, and helped by en couraging and sympathetic words to walk in it. This is the opportunity for the wise parent or the judicious teach er to come to the assistance of the suffering little culprit. In any case, never accept a falsehood as a settlement of a child's offenses. When the deception is discovered, reo pen the case and correct the lie. Lying is quite a general fault in both children and older folks, but it is the mean e8toffensc in tin whole cata logue of iniquity. Ex. The l.i to Cardinal Manning would occasionally, at the house of an intimate friend, throw over "the care of nil the thurches" for ai hour and indulge in amusing re miniscences. One story he used to tell, though to him self was the bnttolits humor was a sculptor who had at tempted the -Cardinal's oust at Uome. Inning one of the sittings the sculptor discoursed on phienology, and Manning made hiia point out on his head lie was modeling the supposed seat of tho var ious organs or "bumps." At lust Manning said: "Where is the organ of con scientionsness?" The sculptor walked across the loom to where Manning was sitting, and touching a certain spot of the'Cardinal's crainum, said: "That's where it. ought to be." Youth's Companion. OABTOniA. it ea Tr It isp'-etry generally known that ex-Senator Ransom is one of the largest farmers in the State. Next to Mr. Geo. Vanderbilt he is said to be the largest land owner in the State. While in Charlotte last week he told the Observ er t hai there was a fine stand of cotton on his place' on the Roanoake, and his general crop prospects are excellent. There is but one way to put an end to h. nch 'aw. The first is to let- it be known that there will be no delay in hanging men guilty of crime for which lynching occurs. It too often happens that the scoundrel who should bo hung gets a term in the peni tentiary and after awhile some Ooverr.oi pardons him. That infuriates the people, and they refuse to let the law take its course. News and Observer. To t ore t uiutipatiuu ITowwr. TalieC-wi-arels Cuiiilv l utlmrllc. lw or '3c It C.
