Vatam Damiorat.- : Robert. C. Rivers, W v ; EDITOR ANDTltni'ttlETOlt. rHURSDAY, April 21,1002 The Democbat has" from time to time urged upon its rea tiers t he a bsol u te necessi ty of pay ins: their u poll tax on or be fore toe first day of - n t mon ( h, if t hey wish to yote in the November elec tion, and we make this, onr last appeal to them, and we trust that at sun down on Thursday of next week every tax-payer in North Carolina will have in his possession bis tax receipt, which alone can give him a voire in the 4-4ion of our .officers. We told that many of our jir i'rty holders in the coun t. .vtio have made payments to the a'mount; to the Sheriff of, or in excess of the poll, and having credjt for same on receipts still in the posses sion of the Sheriff, are claim incr that they will beenti. tied to their vote for said payment, regardless of t he fact that they have ..no' re. i-eipt tor same. Tnis is clear ly a mistaken idea and those who , are laboring under it, had better pay the remain der and lift their receipt if they wish to vote. Bearthis in mind and blame no one if you are refused your vote bri these grounds. We have con fS Ji'tttly believed from the be uinning that but few if any, of our people would fail to pay their taxes by the time prescribed by law, but Sher iff Baird told us on Tuesday that the number in the comi ty is quite laige, with only one week ot grace left, and we now fear that Rcoresof them will be cut out. Now, friends, let us again urge up on you, in the name of your homes and children, In the .name of patriotism j in the name of good government, to pay your, taxes and be . ready for the great battle that is to be fought at the polls next November. What will you do about il? The Board of Education )f Watnmra county at the April meeting fixed the max- t:num salary of first grade teachers at $35 per month. The Board nlso decided to raise the standard of teach ers, as they raised the sala ries. To give even a synopsis of this speech would be a " futile attempt. Those who failed to hear him, missed tue oppor tunity almost of a life time, The inspiiation ol his speech cannot but nerve our people to greater efforts and zeal in the cause of edcuation. The afternoon .exercises were taken up in declumn turn's and recitations hv the upper elapses, closing with a debate by four young men of the Watauga Literary Socie ty, on the subject, 'Resolved, That we should continue to aid our University.' These speeches were exceptionally tine and the close attention given In the crowd showed a marked interest in the ques tion as well ns the ability showu in the speeches on each side. . Tuesday night; the exerci ses ilosed with a concert, by all the school. This was one of the; best we have, ever seen. The large auditorium was packed to its utmost ca pacity; not even standing room could be hod for the many who were left out. : Wednesday morning was the sad time, when many of the students bade farewell to their teachers and school mates to go to their homes, and on into the stern reali ties' of life..
