Repub lican party in North Carol i na. It diM not like the mnend raent nnd fought it, but nov the Republican protests that the Northern Republieaus sioiild not try to control the a tion of that party in North Carolina'. It says: '"Hot this amendment ;wns framed by the people of North Carolina themselves the na tion had nothing to do with it and whether constitution nl or unconstitutional, law or no law it means, if it means anything, that the ne gro is to be 'eliminated from politics' at the' present, and this implication is just aseii Horrible as that part which says that thoqp who cannot read and write the constitu tion shall not be allowed to vote. Everybody knows that the law was framed for the purpose of eliminating the negro from polities and if the law is allowed to V entorced at all it-will be enforced in toto.. Certainly it is rather late for any Northern senti ment to dictate the Republi can policy of the South, lor thirty years the Southern re publicans have been strug gling to give the negro, as well as every other citizn, his constitutional rights, and it made no difference how se vere the conflict or how hnz ardons the undertaking they received no rtssistsnnce from the North, either in genuine sentiment or in substantial aid. Now since the national government has stood off and seen, without a protest, the Southern States one by one restrict the negro vote they can hardly be accredit ed with an over sense of jus tice for instating and deman ding that the local leader's fiuht for the negroes that are left and keep themselves at daggers point with the Democrats who are scramb ling for what negro votes they can get. The Northern Republican is not as good a friend to the n gro as the Southern Republican.forhow much recognition has the North evsr given the negro in office or anything else? But through the fluht that the Southern Republican have made for the negro and the recognition they have given them, the North has gotten the strength of ah most the solid negro vote in the North. Now do thy want JUMPED ON A TEN PENNY NAIL The little daughter of Mr. J. N. Powell jumped on an in verted rake made of ten pen nv nails, and thrust one nail entirely through her foot and a second one half through. UhamberlainsPain Balm was proa ptly applied and in five minutes later the pain had disappeared and no more snf tering was experienced. In three days the child was wearing hr shoe as usunl with absolutely no discom fort. "Mr. Powell is a well known merchant of Fork land. Va. Tf there is a n y truth in these reports it must hi that this is as for as their virtue and sense of justice goe. Formerly the sentiment basbpen with them, 'settle your local affairs; these things must adjust theiu; Hel ves. Such was the reply to Freneh who was driven out of Wilmington nnd others who sought relief. Now our motto should be, if the gov erhirient is to allow the letter and spirit ot thenationulcon stitution to be violated by any sort of practices or state law, that no intermeddling of the Northern leaders he al lowed, hut that our local mat tern be adjusted by our local leaders. If th North wants to show the negro any spec ial favor at this time in or der to hold his vote in t h e North, h't them give him what place and power t h ej see fit in the North and let 'their local matters adjust themselves.' The Republicans in North Carolina will attend to things here und at the same time thej will continue to remain the best friend to the negro and will champion the cause of the most practi ;al methods for 'equal rights to all and special privileges to none.' " FORTY YEARS IN TORTURE. To be relieved from a torturing disease after forty yeats torture miht well cause the gratitude of anvone. Biblical Recorder: A certain citizen of North Carolina was not long ago promised the of flee of postmaster at a cer tain place. He was poor; had a large farailf and no means of support save bis daily -labor. Delighted with the pros pect, he went to the place. When he got there Jhe found that the man who had the of nVe and whom he should su persede was a poor man wit h a lage family. Seeing this he sent word to those who had offeren him the office that he would not take it, "The pres ent incumbent," he, said, ''is a poor man and a good one, I will not take his place from him. It would coudemn me before God." And he went to work. This i the best example of the Golden Rule that we ha ve lound in North Carolina pub lie life. "Last winter an infant child of mine hid croup in a violent form," says Elder J. W. Rogers, a Christian Evan gelist, of FiHey, Mo. "I gave her a fcw dose- of Chamber lain's Cough Remedy and in a short time all danger was oust and the child recovered. This remedy not.' only cures croup, but when given as dent as the first, symptoms soonar, will prevent the at tack. It contains no opium or other harmful substance and may be given as confl adully to an infant as to an appet. For sale by Blackburn.
