The Republicans ol Watauga County met in convention at the court boose at l,p m., last Mon Aav for tbe Durpoiw of nomina ting candidates lor the Senate and House and tduominat a lull county tlcket. JXne body was called to order by Chairman L. II. Michael, and Roy M. Brown was appointed Secretary. The convention being ready for busi ness, the roll ot townships was called, which developed tbe fact that all, save Beech Mountain, were renrbsented, and the con ven tioti declared itself ready, for the nomination of the various can-! didate Ex-Sheriff W. H. Calaway was nominated on the first ballot as a candidate to represent the dis trict in tbe State Senate. There was no other aspirant. Ballots were then prepared and Dndtey Farthing was nominated as a candidate lor the Legisla turi over his opponent, Dr. J. M. Hodees. Mr. Farthing is a new recruit in the Republican ranks, and this is tbe first chance he has had at a slice ol pie. Hodges is a Republican ol the manor born, but he must wait, Bays the Sheriff John W. Hodges 'w a s re-nominated on the first ballot as he bad no opposition. Then came one ol tbe rubs of the convention. A Clerk was to be nominated and there were three avowed candidates jn tbe field the present incumbent, Tbos. Bingham. L. U. Michael, and C. R. N orris. The Chair was vacated, and F. A. Linney was j,,ade,chairman protein. Sever al baflots were takeu, when Mr. Michael, tboueh well in the lead, seeing the "hand writing on the wall" withdrew from the contest and Mr. Bingham was nomina ted to succeed himself on the fbl lowing ba'lot. TtiibNo. 2. came when the chair announced that the con yen lion would then ballot for a can didate for Register ol Deeds. Ja cob May, Wra. Elrod, Philip Y ounce, Monroe Gragg wore the candidates, and alter much bal loting Elrod, in a touching and . patriotic mwech, Withdrew, Phil; d auicklv followed suit and the following ballot resulted in the nomination ol Jacob May to sue ceed himsell for the filth time. The nomination, on motion, was made unanimous despite the fact that one of tbe defeated canili dates vigorously shook hlH head and not a word did he speak W. T.Hayes, who has held the position of County Treasurer, for tbe past two years, was re nominated on the first ballot. Simmeon Penle was then nom inated forCoroner.'withoutoppo ition. L. M.
