WATAUGA DEMOCRAT. R. C. Rivers, Proprietor. TnrniAV, Sept., 7, 1011. The bench and the bank each lost a good man, yesterday, by resignation. J u d g e Crawford Higg, 'f the ninth judicial dis trict, retire to become professor ot civic law at Trinity College. -Mr. J. K" IkMigbton quit" the office of State Hank Kxnmiuer. Judge Uiggs is now holding court in Hoone, which we are told is his lost term, It is iudeed to be regretted thut he has retir ed from the bench, for such men as he are needed to suppress crime. He hits it hard, and the violator of the law who is convic ted before him may expect and is sure to get punishment entire ly adequate to the offence. The people here, in the mam. nre highly pleaded with Judge Higgs and bib judgment in the various State cases that have been tried before him thus far this week. The 'Democrat. It rest ed in a Dortion of the building which always guarded, brilliant ly lighted at night, and though the frame was removed from its accustomed place it was in the builbing and the picture was cut out and taken. Says The Lexington Dispatch: "The new residence of Rev A. L. Stanford, in Park Place, is to be occupied this week by Mr. and Airs. C. K. Toils, and their charming family of Mooresville. Mr. Voils is engaged m business at High Rock on the South bound, and is also intersted in the cotton ginning business at that place." Rev A. L. Stanford was once the popular pastor of Boone Circuit; 1 We areglad that Mrs, Noel follows her husband to the peni tentiary for the crimes against society of which they were con victed. We are proud to believe that in our beloved South land the hellish trafic in white slave will never be allowed to flourish. When she came to Watauga County she moved her member ship to Three Forks church where she was u member at the time of her death. She often said that there was nothing in death for her to lear: that she hated to leave her fam ily and Iriends, but was to go: and anxious for the time to come when she would be free from suf fering. An impressive funeral service was held at her home conducted by her pastor Kev I. C. Miller. Her body was laid to rest in the family burial ground to wait the resurrection morn. With deep sorrow we chronicle the death of this noble woman realizing the fact that her family has sustained a loss thattime nor chance can never repair. Dur with pleasure do we point to her motherly and christian spirit which characterized her as one of the noblest of women. To much could not be said in honor of her memory. She was t he sunshine and consolation ol her home and pence maker of the community in which sin; liveJ. She is in the enjoyment ol that blessing pronounced by Him who spake as never man spake when he said, "Blessed are the peace linkers for they shall bo called the children of liod." No strang er could enter the door without ninjc away with i blessing upon hi head. To see Ikt was to love and honor her. In the death of this dear sister the community hss sustained a great loss indeed: hut our loss is her gain. And well may it be said of her. ..HUss- ed aie the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: yea saith the spirit that may rest from their labors and their works do follow them." L. C. Wilson.
