VOL XXV UOONE, WATAUGA COUNTY, TIIUKSDAY, JULY 16 1911. NO. 51. Dotibtoi ii thi Milatt Question. From theCongressional Record, of lecent date, nr take this tell ing lit tie eteeli delivered hy the Hon. It. L. Ponglitononthefloor of congress on the much discuss ed milage rate for members. Mr. Dough ton baid: "Mr. Speaker. I shall cheerfully support the amendment offered by the gentle man from Indiana (Mr. Cox) to reduce the amount allowed for mileage from 20 to 10 cents per mile. This question arises at each session of Congress, only to arise again at the next session. There must be some fundamental reason for its coming up at each session. In my judgement the agitation will continue until it. is settled right as all matters should be. "The reason I support the amendment of the gentleman from Indiana is because csjteri ence has taught me again and a gain that it is impossible to get it reduced below that amount. "The gentleman from Oklaho ma (Mr. Murry) and the gentle man from Washington (Humph rey) go out of their way to read a moral lecture to the member ship of this House, and say that a man who does not bring his family here is unworthy to be a Member of this body. They inti mate that that is the only way he can be kept in the path of mor al rectitude. That is none of their concern. I say, without fear of successful contradiction, that a man who must be kept in the sha dow of his family to keep his life circumspect and who otherwise wander from the path of rectitude, is unworthy to be a Member of this body. If that is all that re strains him fxDm.TWiLlkjiig;Jn be path of vice and evil, he will go there regardless of his surround ings. "The gentleman from Washing ton takes advantage of this, as t of every other occasion to criti- 5 cise the President of the United ! States, and speaks of us being of kept here by White House domi- I nation, but the shafts of the gen- tleman from Washington fall i harmlessly at the feet of the Pivs j ident. The President of the Unit I ed States has not used any arbi I trary means on this Congress, j True, he hasconstantly reminded ed Congres of its duty and pledg I es made to the people, and has, with courage and patriotism. pointed out the lines he would have us follow, but he has made no arbitrary demands and has weilded no big stick. In spite of all the criticism, deeds done, re sults accomplished, and things performed, justify his action. "Now, Mr. Speaker, I had rath er pay ray own way to Washing ton and receive not one cent of mileage than to be constantly ac cused of taking money out of the Public Treasury, to which I am not entitled. I do not say that it is graft; in fact it isnot, aslong as sanctioned by law, but- it is wrong, and should therefore be reduced. Twenty cents per mile was based on the old stagecoach mode of traveling, and there is no justification for it under the mod ern methods. "I do not charge those who fa vor the present rate with being grafters, neither have they the right to accuse those of us who desire to reduce the rate with be ing demagogues, but I do believe that it is an evil that has existed far too long and that we 6hould now avail ourselves of the pres ent opportunity of fixing the a mount where it will be both just to the Government and ourselves, and thereby put an end to the agitation. I think this amend ment is as near to that point as we can possibly come at present. This agitation will cease when we get down to the basic principles of honesty and justice and not before." SUCHBUIR. One of the most lira lit if ul wed dings of the season, oivured at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. C. And last to enter were the bride and groom. Nevermore lovely did the bride look than on this occasion. She was beauti fully clad in a gown of white silk crape dechene draped" with rich lace and pearls. She carried a bouquet of bridal roses and fems. After the ceremony and con. gratulations the guests passed into the dining room where deli cious refreshments were served by Misses Lillie Haltiwanger, Blanch Connelly, Lois and Maiy Lou Glasgow, after which the crowd amused them selves by cut ting the bride's cake in which the wedding ring had been put, Miss Mattie Glasgow being the fortu nate one, cut the ring. The din ing room was decorated in ferns and pink carnations. The guests passed from the dining room in to the front 'parlor and viewed the vast number of presents, con sisting of silver, cut glass, gold, china etc., which had been bestow ed upon thishappyyoungcouple. The bride quietly with drew from the merry crowd and donned a handsome blue silk crepe travel ing suit. At eight o'clock Mr. and Mrs. Blair, accompanied by a number of young people, left by automobiles for the station where the bride and groom araid a show er of rice, boarded a pullnian for the groom's home in Boone, N. C. going by the way of Columbia and Asheville. The bride threw her bouquet from the steps of the train as it was slowly moving out and Miss Eva Ortnand was the lucky young lady.
