It does not mean a partially successfully attempt to Jurtail liijuor consumption, resulting in drinking at secret places, abusejof me lical licenses and:general evasion and subter fuge. It does mean that the vast population who consumed .1,. 0( K000,000 worth of vo.lka a year; whose ordinary condition has b.en described by Russian themselves as ranging from a slight degree of stimulation up ward, has been lilted almost in one day to sobriety. t)n that day when the niobali zation Began, policemen visited every place where vodka is sold, locked up the supply of liijuor which is almost pure alcohol, and placed on'the shop the Imperial seal. , Since the manufacture and sale of vodka is a government monopoly, it is not difficult to enforce prohibition and from the day the shops were closed drun kenness vanished. The results -already are seen to peasantry. -They are begin ning to look like a different race Marks of suffering, the pinched looks of iljness and improper nourishment have gone from their faces. I heir clothes are cleaner, and both men and wo men appear more neatly and bet trr dressed. Homes of the poor formerly destitute, now present something like order and thrift. In Petrograd and Moscow the efiect is fairlv startling. On hol idays inebriates always filled the police st itions and often laya bout in the streets To-day un attended women pass at night through portions of these cities AvheJe it was former! v dangerous for men. The South is u laud not nloiiei 1) pioiniv but of the tiiltilbneiit ' f the promise to all who cuiuv into its borders for the purpose f engaging in the work of ugri- ' .nltup'. This is a section blessed by the gifts of nature in soil and climate an 1 all that is needed is hat there be a larger popula tion w hich is to get at this wor'. of development. In the West the value of the immigrant has been recognized 'y States and by railroads. In lced the vast development of that section would not have: been possible but for thenewpeo ple who ha ve been brought into it. for these indeed have built up i he waste places in a wonderful legive. The West hasstood forth is the section of progress. Rlessed in a greater degive by nature for the development of its agricultural life of the South has not attracted to if such a class of immigration in such a degree is has the West. The alertness of the Westerner sets the example to the men of the South. If Immi gration has served in so large a degree for the going forw ard of the , West then why not make a j stronger tight for this for t h e South? And to North Carolina there is of course this lesson. We have a great State, a State of the great est possibilities. Rut we need niote people to develop these possibilities which an; right at hand. Our development has been great but it can be made greater. This matter is one which should appeal to the State Board of Ag riculture now in session here and ttltitf ldir ivill lm ilnlnrr on lit II1HL lnUI .1 III W UWlll (ill II creased service to the state if it takes steps looking to an earnest and continued campaign to bring into the South that class of im migration which would aid us, whether this be from foreign lands or from other sections of this country. The thing for us to do is to go after immigration and to press the fight for it year nfer .year, that this State may continue to make progress. To do this in t he greatest degrte more people is the need, and more peo ple can be broupht to this State if this program to bring them here is prosecuted with vigor. The Novemler American Mag aziue contains a highly interest' inc. u nd important article entl tied ''Edison in War Time" des' cribiug the great responsibilities j that have been forced on Edison by the war, and reporting how wonderfully he is meeting them. The body of the article is an ac count of Edison's sudden entrance into the manufacture of carbolic acid a ton and a half a day of which is required in his business and the supply of which was to tally cut off by the war. Ex perts told Edison that they could get ready to manufacture this material in six or eight months, but this didn't satisfy theelectri cal w izard and by working night nnd day he succeeded in setting up a manufactury for carbolic acid in seventeen days. Follow ing is an extract: ' 'There's the real war,' he cri ed, J'the only war in which hu manity has anything permanent at stake. (Jet into Nature's en trenchments and make her give up. That's what we must do. We've been depending too much on other people to do it for us, too satisfied to be a nation of as semblers, putting together what we can pickup quickest and chea pest. Now the other people can't give us our material any more and where are we? "Substitute, substitute! we've got to find them. Countless! no end my head is duzzing w ith them.' He waved his hands aloft with fingers spread. It nas been too easy for us to import our materials. This Eu ropean war came along to put us to it and teach us to depend on ourselves. I am learning how. I have been as bad as the rest of American manufacturers maybe not quite as bad, but bad en ough. I .am learning, though, earning fast.." Apply Sloans Freely For Lum bago. Your attacks of Lumbago are not nearly fo hopeless as they seem. You can relieve them al most instantly by a simple ap plication of Sloan's Liniment on tha back and loins. Lumbago is a form of rheumatism, and yields readily to loan s, which pene trates quickly all in through the sore, tender muscles, limhers up the back and makes it feel flue. (Jet a bottle of Sloan's Liniment or 25 cents of any druggist and have it in the house against colds, sore and swollen joints, rheumatism, neuralgia, scnitira and like ailments. Y'our money back if not suiUnVn. but it does give almost instant relief. The Lenoir News says: Mrs. Y I). Moore suffered a slight stroke of paralysis last Friday morning and for a short time her condi tion was quite alarming. She ral ied. however, and seems now in a air way to complete recovery. Distress in the Stomach. There are many people w h o have a distress in the stomach idter meals. It is due to indiges tion and easilv remedied bv ta king one of Chamberlain's Tab lets alter mpals. Mrs. lienry Padghau, Victor, N. Y writes "For some time I was troubled with headache and distress in rav stomach after eating, a'sn with constipation. About six months ago 1 Began to take Lhamner lain's Tabiets. They regulated the action of my bowels and the headache nnd other annoyances ceased in a short time." Obtain able everywhere.
