Watauga JDtmocrat. Town and County. Considerable local matter crowded out this week. Court proceedings in full next - week. The concourse of peope in Boone on Monday was unusually large. Preaching service at the E piscopal church in Boone at the usual hour next Sunday morn ing. Little Miss Helen Lewis, of Statesville, has been a guest at the home of her uncle, Dr. Bing ham, in Boone, for several days. Mrs. Karl Whitener, of Hick ory, with her little daughter, is visiting at the home of her pa rents, Mr. and Mrs. John II. Nor ris, in East Boone. Rev. S. E. Gragg will preach at Deerfleld school house on next Sunday at 2:30, p. m. His sub ject will be, "The age in Bible prophecy known or designated as the Time of the End." Rev. D. P. Waters, pastor of Boone circuit, asks us to say that the Fourth Quarterly Con ference will be held with the Ruth er.wood church on Saturday, Sept. 9, 191G. Alll official mem. bers are especially invited to at tend. Miss Mary Francis Tayne, n graduate of the A. T. S., and one of our choice young ladies, left last week for Taylorville, N. C, where she has accepted a po sition as teacher in the graded school of that town. Mrs. II. J. Hardin left Mon day for a visit to her son, Dr, K. H. Hardin, at Pineville, N. C. She was accompanied by her daughter, Miss Lucy, who will enter the Greensboro College for women. The Democrat certainly tips its cap to the large number of the old guard and new patrons who came to its financial relief during the week. The money re ceived is certainly appreciated but the kind words that accom panied much of it, was indeed a pleasure we cannot express. Mr. Eugene Forester, of Alle ghany county, who is a candi date for the State Senate from i his district, was in town early in the week, and made a brief but very pointed speech at the court house Monday. Mr- Stephen Brown, of Blow ing Kock, was in to see us Mon day, aud gaye us this item: A a box supper and cake-cutting given at Sandy Flat school house on last Saturday night afforded revenue to the amount of $84., the cake cutting bringing in $G3. of that amount. Mr. Conrad Yates, of the firm of Yates Bros, at West Riverside, was in this week to settle his ad vertising bill, having sold out his business. He is putting up a new building and hopes to get back in business within thirty days. He contracted for the same advertising space he has been oc cupying when he re-opens. Announcements of the mar riage of Mr. Donald Farthing of Boone, to Miss Myrtle Sudderth, of Blowing Rock, were received in town Tusday afternoon, the nuptials having been solemnized on June 23, last. The couple is a popular one, and, late an It is, our warm congratulations to our kinsman and his bonny bride of more than two months, are extended. Judge Lane, was unavoida bly detained on account of the illness of his wife, and did not ar rive in time to open court on Monday, regardless of the fact that all the jurors, lawyers, wit1 nesses, etc., were on hand for the court. The extra expense to the county is considerable; but it seems that, under the circum stances, no one was to blame. Court convened on Tuesday mor ning, and the business is being handled with dispatch. There will be a pie supper at Henson's Chapel onnextSatur- day night, the proceeds to go to the Methodist Orphanage. The public generally invited. The following young peope from Boooe and vicinity are off to school: Misses Dare Phillips, Xelia Greer and Velraa Rivers to Davenport College: Miss Lucy Hardin to the Greensboro Col lege for Women; Messrs. A. C. Payne, Sam Horton and Tom Mast to Wake Forest: Messrs. 'Jap' Spencer, Tracy Councill, Fred Farthing and Walter John son, to the University and Miss Verna Wilson to Elon College. Friend Tom Seehorn, of Le noir, who, by the way, is one of the loading buggy salesmen in that town, was in town the first of the week, and while here took into copartnership Mr. Job Blair of Vilas, who will keep constant ly on hand a full line of the very best buggies to be found. Job got busy on Monday and Tues day, and sold 10, aside from at tending to his duties as officer of the court. If m need of a good buggy, see or write Blair at Vi las, or Seehorn, of Lenoir. Ad. Prof. Logan Howell, a teach er in New York City for the past eighteen years, was a visitor in the village the last of the week. He was, at one time, Supt. of the Graded Schools of Raleigh, and went from there to the great me tropolis. He and Prof. B. B. Dougherty, of the A. T. S. have been friends for many years. U e are told that his address before the stndent body of our Institu tion on Saturday was very enter taining, bin subject being "New York City." On Saturday evening last Ralph Colvard, carrier on the star mail route from Trade to Blowing Rock, happened to an accident that came nigh proving fatal to his young nephew, Esley Colvard, who was riding in the buggy with him. Incomingdown Rich mountain at a rapid gate, the buggy struck a rock, over turned, and the boy received a fearful cut in.the face, while the driver escaped practically un hurt. His condition now is not considered very serions. but the wound is a painful one. Resolutions of Respects. Landi ine Eggers was born No vember 13th, 183G, andjdied Ap ril 23, 191 0. That we extend to the be reaved family and relatives our tenderest sympathy, and com mennd them to the tender mercy and lovmg care of God, who' knowethjall things and doeth that which is best for all. 3.
