J. J. L. Sherwood, were drafted and u nauimously adopted by the church at Mouutaiu City, Tenn., on Dec. 2: "Brother1 Sherwood was high ly respected and dearly leloved by our people and especially by the membership of this, the Mountain Citv Run tint, church. "He was pastor of this church for a uuiuber of years and en deared himself to our member ship by his earnestness in "pira ting the Word" and earnestly contending for "the faith once for-Jall delivered to the saints." He preached salvation by grae through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and believed iu a religion that eminated Iroin God and be came the dominant factor in the lives of those who pussessod it. Therefore be it Resolved: ".1. That the Buptiwts have sustained a great loss in the death of Brother Sherwood, and that we mourn with the sorrow ing frieuds over the death of one so .dear. 2. That we extend to the be reaved chid iv o of the deceased our deepest and most sincere sympathy, and commend them to their Fathers God, the only source of real comfort. "3. That a copy of this me morial and these resolutions be spread upon the church records, a copy furnished to The Watau ga Democrat, The Johnson Coun ty News and the Baptist Reflec tor for publication; and that a copy be sent to the home people. As tB thi Income Tax. Collector A. 4). Watts sends out the following from hia oltico at Statesvillo under date of Dec. 11: You wou't have to figure out your own income tax all by your eelf hereafter. The Government is going to seud out men to help you. It will be up to you to hunt up these men, who will bo sent in to every county seat town, and some other towns besides, to meet the people. Postmasters, bankers and newspapers will be able to tell you when the gov ernment s income tax man win 'e around, and where to find him. He will answer your ques tions, s..eur you to the return, and take your money. Returns of income for 191 7 must be mae'e between Jan. 1 and March 1, '18. "The Government recognizes," says Collector Watts, "that ma ny persons experience a good deal of difficulty in filling out in come tax forms. It recognizes. too, that taxpayers resident at points where collector's officers are not easily accessible find it hard to get proiter instructions in the law. Next year, when ev ery married pet son living with wife or husband and- having a net incomo of $ 2,000, and every unmarried percon not the head of a family and having u net in come of $1,000 fortheyeai'1917 must umko a return of income on the form prescribed, there will be lundreds in every commuity see king llight on the law, and help iu executing their returns. My own and every other collection JistiTjt in the naMon will be di vided into districts, with the county as a unit, and a govern- neut officer informed in the in come tax assigned to each dis trict He will spend as many days as necessary in eacu county, vvy likely in' the court house at the countyseat town. In cities hero there are collectors branch offices, he will bo there, and in other cities at the county court uouso or postofjice building. My office will in due time advise post masters and bunkers and send outjnotices to the newspapers stating when the ugent wil be iu each county. It will be unneces siry for prosj)ectivo taxpayers to ask my office for forms on which to make if turns. The o (fl eer who visits tueir county win nave them. It may be stated as a matter of general information that 'net income is the remaindur after subtracting expenses from gross income. Personal, family or liv ing expense is not expenso in the meaning of the law, the exemp tion being allowed to cover such expenses. The new exemptions of f 1.000 anifa.ouu win um tnousauus to the number of income tax pay ers in this district, inasmuch as many farmers, merchants, pro fessional men, tradsuien and sal ary workers and ii great many wage workers will be required to make returns and pay tax. The law makes it the duty of the taxpayer to seek out tin col lector. Many people assume that if aa income tax lorm is not sent or a govern tnMit does not cull, they are relieved from making report. This is decidedly in error It is the other way round. Tin taxpayer has got to go to ihe Government and tf he doesu r within the tirnd proscribed, he is a violator of tln law, an I the government will go to hi n with lis penalties." Last Saturday Mr. Lindsay Patterson had a shipment of -100 sheep sent over to his farm in the Valley the Cowles farm for the winter. Next spring he will place ttk'iu in pasture on his Watauga farm Ltnoir Topic. Two blockade stills of 35 gal loin capacity wcro destroyed last Saturday by Deputy Collec tor Jones and PosM'tuan Moser.
