or Relief of Starving People in the
Near East.
Mr. George P. Hagaman has
been appointed by State Chair
man J. Y. Joyner, as County
Chairman of Watauga, for the A-
merican Committee for Kelief in
the Far East, and he through his
Secretary, Mr. Koy Gragg, is
sending out letters to each and
every Sunday School superinten
dent 'in' the county urging that
they take a collection at their re
spective schools on the first Sun
day in April for the benefit of
those suffering, starving people.
Watauga's quota is only 600.00,
and a shame it would be were she
to fail to put up the small pit
tance when people are starving
by the tens of thousands. Inde
pendent of what the Sunday
schools may do, each citizen in
our good county should give and
give liberally to those-people to
whom bread is a stranger and at
whose doors hunger and death is
claiming admission. The Demo
crat will be one of twenty to give
$5.00 to the fund, and it is our in
tention to try to collect one hun
dred dollars of the amount asked
lor in Watauga. The case is an
urgent one. What will you do a
bout it, fellow citizens? .
New County Home for Watauga.
We are much pleased to know
that Watauga County is to.have'a
home for the aged and infirm in
accordance with the spirit of civ
ilization, home whereour unfor
tunate citizens may spend their
remaining years in comfort and
rest. We are informed that it is
to be a modern brick building,
with running water and toilets,
and bath room, and good sewer
age system, the plans to be drawn
by an architect. ,

Road Work Progressing Nicely.
The Secretary of the Road
Commission informs us that the
road work is progressing nicely.
One shovel has been doing some
extra work through the town of
Boone, at the town's expense, of
course. It will have passed the
Muster Field before this paper
reaches its readers. The other
will have connected the gap on
Rich Mountain. This shovel has
built nearly one mile within the
last four weeks, at a cost, when
completed, not exceeding 1,800
per mile. This is seven hundred
dollars a mile less than the State
engineer's estimate per mile on
a similar piece of work. '
