Brannock, of John son City, Tenn., was in town last week, and while here bad loaded for the B. & 0. Railroad ten cars of cross ties, which he bought, in the main, of B. H. Watson & Co. There has been a considerable drop in ties since this purchase was made. Messrs. Poley Wyke andTilden Foster returned from Ohio last week, where they had been look intr over some farming prop erty in that State with a view of buying. They were highly pleas d, secured options on farms to their liking, and may bcate permanently in Ohio a little later tn. Civil Engineer, Roy Johnson, under the direction of the State Highway Commission, bean the survey,, for the hard-surfaced road to be built between Boone and the Uaidweli county line, on Tuesday morning. It is hoped and believed that active construe tion work will begin on this im portant link or road early m the spring. Miss Lula Prestwood, for sev eral years teacher in the public BChool at Boone, was married at hei home in Hendersonville on Dec. 29. to Mr. Fred Eugene Gas ton. On last Sunday a dear little year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. An drew Ragan, of New river, died after an illness of several days, and the little form was laid to rest in the town cemetery, Mon day. The mother returned from Johns Hopkins Hospital at Bal timore, where she underwent a serious operation, a little more than a week before the death of her little son, and the shock on her was fearful. y Mr. Roy Johnson, Civil Engin eer, of Lenoir, and Miss Eddie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. MulliganVroad con struction contractor, of North Wilkesboro, was with Watauga's Road Commission on Monday and Tuesday with a bid for the com pletion of the Boone Trail High way to the Wilkes county line, but they failed tocome to terms, Mr. Mulligan leaving for horns yesterday morning. It is the in tention of the Good Roads Com mission to resume work on the nine mile link just as soon as weather conditions will permit. The new schedule thatfs be ing tried out by theLinv.lle Riv er Railway Co., may, if perma nently adoped by them, prove a money-maker for them, but the delay of freight both to and from Johnson City, will be a serious draw back to the business men of Boone. However, they hope that this temporary inconvenience will be remedied soon, as the Co. has always shown a disposi tion to do the right thing. As the schedule now is, takes fright two days to go to or come from John son City to Boone.
