Mrs. G. C. Winkler, who has
been in rather poor health for
some time, was taken to Johns
Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore

Mr. C. H. Brannock, of John
son City, Tenn., was in town last
week, and while here bad loaded
for the B. & 0. Railroad ten cars
of cross ties, which he bought, in
the main, of B. H. Watson & Co.
There has been a considerable
drop in ties since this purchase
was made.

Highway Commission, bean the
survey,, for the hard-surfaced
road to be built between Boone
and the Uaidweli county line, on
Tuesday morning. It is hoped

folks here. Misses Carrie Horton
and Ruth Coffey left Monday for
Spartanburg, S. C, where they
will re-enter Converse College.

On last Sunday a dear little
year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. An
drew Ragan, of New river, died
after an illness of several days,
and the little form was laid to
rest in the town cemetery, Mon
day. The mother returned from
Johns Hopkins Hospital at Bal
timore, where she underwent a
serious operation, a little more
than a week before the death of
her little son, and the shock on
her was fearful. y
Mr. Roy Johnson, Civil Engin
eer, of Lenoir, and Miss Eddie,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. E.
Kerley, of Blowing Rock, were
married in Hickory last Friday,
and came to the Critchcr Hotel
where they will remain for some

Mr. J. M. MulliganVroad con
struction contractor, of North
Wilkesboro, was with Watauga's
Road Commission on Monday and
Tuesday with a bid for the com
pletion of the Boone Trail High
way to the Wilkes county line,
but they failed tocome to terms,
Mr. Mulligan leaving for horns
yesterday morning. It is the in
tention of the Good Roads Com
mission to resume work on the
nine mile link just as soon as
weather conditions will permit.

nently adoped by them, prove a
money-maker for them, but the
delay of freight both to and from
Johnson City, will be a serious
draw back to the business men
of Boone. However, they hope
that this temporary inconvenience
will be remedied soon, as the
Co. has always shown a disposi
tion to do the right thing. As the
schedule now is, takes fright two
days to go to or come from John
son City to Boone.
There . will be given at Mast
Seminary on Saturday, night Jan
uary the 8th, a play entitled
"Out in the Streets' by our best
young men and women. Charges

wards paying Henson's Chapel.
