V&t Watauga rmocrat LOCAL AFFAIRS Mr. Zeb Farthing dropped by yesterday morning long enough to say: "Uncle Bob, it's a boy." A goodly number of cases on the State docket have .been dis posed of up to today, Wednes day. Full proceedings next week. Mrs. Rivers, who has been in rather poor health of late, if ta king treatment for a while under her brother, Dr. P. C. Jurney, at Turnersburg, N. C. Mr. Milton Ward, for many years Station Agent at Neva, Johnson county, Tenn.. died at his home on the 27th of August, after a brief illness. Mrs. Fred R. Paxton, of Sa vannah, Ga., has arrived, and will spend a few weeks at the home of her aunt, Mrs, J. C. Fletcher, in Boone. Mr. Roy Brown, son of Adol phus Brown, was marriea here last SaturtDly to Miss Naomi Vines, the Rev. George Brown performing the ceremon.v . We have received the 1921 cat alogue of the Appalachian Train ing School at Boone, N. C. The school is now a true Normal and o?ers two years of Normal work. The standard high school will be maintained for a few years. Mrs. Alice Councill, of Hicko ry, mother of Judge W. B. Coun cill, is with her nephew, Mr. J. D. Councill, in Boone, this week. The many friends of the dear old lady are delighted to see her a gain. Mr. Oscar Hardin and family have moved into the Little resi dence, which has been occupied for some time by Mr. C. A. Ellis, he and family taking board at the Critcher Hotel for the pres ent, Mr. Ronda Gragg, son of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Gragg, of Boone, who has been in the em ploy of a street car company in Washington, D. C, for some Messrs. W. H. Gragg and O. L. Coffey have pulled off quite a trade, the result of which is that Mr. Gragg is now the owner of the pretty home erected in Boone by Mr. Coffey, apd Mr. Coffey's half interest in the Boone furni ture & Lumber Co., while Mr. Coffey comes into possesion of the tine' farm owned by Mr. Gragg at Foscoe. Mr. Robert Pulliam, of Wash ington, D. G, is at the home of his uncle, Mr. L. J. Perkins for a few weeks vacation. By the dint of hard work, sinco going to the Capitol City youpg Mr. Pull iam has almost completed his college course, and hopes to com plete his study of law within the next year, this being his cho sen profession profession. Last Wednesday Mr. M. B. Blackburn received a message from Kansas City, Mo. bearing the sad news of the death of his nephew, Attorney Thos. Black burn, in a hospital in that city. Deceased is a son of Mr. W. W. Blackburn and was rapidly forg ing to the front in his profession. He was a brother to Mrs. Walter Winkler, of Boone. Mr. W. S. Farthing was in town Monday and told The Dem ocrat of the death of his cousin, Mr. Wiley H. Farthing, which occurred at his home at Blount ville, Temi., on the 28th ult. De ceased left Watauga a good many years ago, and had reached the age of 1 years. He was Clerk and Master in Chancery of his county at the time of his death. REV. JOHN CRISP PASSES. Elder John Crisp, son of Hef man and Nancy Crisp, was born May 9, 1931, and died Aug. 29, 1921, aged 90 years, 3 months and.20 days. He professed faith in Christ and joined Meat Camp, church, Watauga county, in th.a fall or winter of 1857. He was, therefore a member of the Mis sionary Baptist church for 64 Concert by LEOLA LUCEY This will be the season's most unique music event. In addition to singing several groups of songs, Miss Lucey has consented to com pare her voice with its Re-Creation by Mr. Edison's new phonograph. She will be assisted by Adrien Freiche, violinist, and Raymond Barry, pianist. The famous soprano will appear at Main Auditorium Saturday, September 17th Admittance by invitation only. A few reservations are still left. We shall be glad to issue these to music-lovers who apply in order of application. Call, write, or telephone. Johnston, who with his little faraiy, has been with relatives at Valle Crucis, was an interesting caller at our office Monday. Mr. Johnston has pro cured his law license, but has not ytt decided just where he will hang out his sningle. Mr. Sam F. Horton, of Vilas, who had been previously elected principal, opened a four-teacher school at Miller's Creek, Wilkes county. The people of that com munity are fortunate to be able to procure the services of the popular young educator. Mr. E. E. (Peck) Holshouser, of Blowing Rock, a graduate of the 'A. T. S., stepped into this office Monday and ordered the paper sent to his address at Davidson College, saying that he would en ter that institution this week for the ensuing term. Rev. Seymour Taylor, of Mor r jii, Anson county, is with rela tives and friends in Watauga for a few days. He is accompanid by the Rev. C. A. Wood, of Wades boro, another eminent Methodist divine, who seems to be enjoying his visit to the mountains to the fullest. During the severe electric storm on last Thursday, four fine yearlings, tbe property of Mr. Tracy Councill, were killed b lightning in hia father's Rich Mountain pastures. The cattle were sheltering under a tree, and the bolt striking itliilled the cattle instantly. His Honor, Judge. Ferguson, through the solicitation of our local bar, adjourned court for to day so that the people having business with the court might attend the big picnic and cele bration at Deep Gap today, giv ches in Caldwell and Watauga counties for 57 years. At the time of his death, and for some time previous, he was not en gaged in pastoral work, but prea ched continually to the churches he visited, here and there until possibly Aug. 1920, when, prob ably, he contracted the sickness that brought on the end. He was a faithful and earnest contender for the Faith; Faith once deliv ered to the Laints. The writer of this imperfect sketch remem bers to have heard Elder J. J. L. Sherwood say that the Bap tists owed him a debt of grati tude for his loyalty to the cause of Eternal Truth. And what more shall I say? Surely the Lord will say: "Well done, good and faith ful servant, enter thou into the joys of thy Lord. The last word he was heard to utter, audably, was "Glory!" His Eldest son, E D. CRISP.
