C., where she had spent several days as the guest ; of her son, Horton Gragg. While In ; Shelby Mrs. Gragg also visited with Dr. and Mrs. C. E. Ellis in their hand some new home. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Ira Edmisten i at Hagaman Clinic on Sunday, a i daughter. Mr. Edmisten, whose oldest son is twenty years old, is a migh- i ty happy fellow, for he says "there | hasn't been a new one around my: place ir, over seven years." i Rev. J. A. McKauglran, former pastor of the Cove Creek Baptist Church, was in the county last week for the Association. Mr. McKaughan is now located at Raleigh, where he is field representative for the United Dry , Forces. Mr. Brantley Duncan auditor for the Federal Division of Personnel, I Washington, D. C., spent the first of the week in town, and left on his return Tuesday. Mrs. Duncan and the children accompanied him and they will make their home in the capital city. Mr. Frank Edmisten of Blowing Rock visited pleasantly with The Democrat Wednesday, renewed Iris subscription and that of his daughter, Mrs. Dan Johnson, at Mountain . City, Mr. Edmisten, who has been I marketing hi3 own produce this fall, states that he finds an improvement in business, that the prices he is receiving are fair and that wholesalers speak optimistically of the produce business later on in the fall. l Mrs. C. \V. Teal ami son, Charles Wayne, returned Sunday from a week's visit with her sisters. Mrs. E C. Benson and Irs. G. E. Leonard, at Durham. ?#iH Mr. H. P. Dougherty of Boone, who most every week has something to offer in the way of perfect or imperfect vegetation, Wednesday morning passed by The Democrat office with a huge yellow cucumber, measuring 141-j inches in length and weigh, ing 5'^ pounds. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kirkman and children left Tuesday of last week for Yadklnvilie. where they will spend the winter. A daughter. Miss Eva Kirkman, who is employed by the Belk-White Company, will remain here. Mr. and Mrs G. E. Matheson of Beaver Dam will occupy the Kirkman home. Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Harris returned Friday from Boston and Woburn. Mass., where they visited relatives. Miss Bzllie Todd Hostess to Friday Afternoon Club. One of the most delightful occasions ;>f the season was the club meeting .vith Miss Billie Todd, on August 23, it her home in Jefferson. The hostess, in her charming manler, received the guests on the porch >f her lovely home. After a pleasant lime of conversaion, the guests were invited into the lining room, where the hostess, aslisted by her sisters, Miss Jennie Tcdd ind Mrs. W. M. Transou, served a lelicious salad plate, followed by weets. Special guests were Miss Clyde Galloway of New Mexico; Miss Nan y Lewis, Boone, and Mrs. W. M. Transou. of Greensboro. Mrs. J. The Etude Music Club was enterained by Robert Lovill last Tuesday ifternoon at a picnic in American region Park. A.ftor playing games, veiners and marshmallows were roas:ed over a campfire, and ice cream ind lemonade were served to the Tiembers, and Mrs. W. R. Lovill and Peggy Lovill. An interesting feature of the meetng was exhibiting the picture of the ::ljxb members which is published in he Etude Music Magazine for September. Last month the club met with Cleo Jreene. and after an interesting program, attractive refreshments were served. The next meeting will be with Master James Norris at his home in Perdnsvilie. Livingstone Club Meets With Mrs. Hooper Hendrlx. The September meeting of the Livingstone Club was held Monday night with Mrs. Hooper Hendrix. The program, in charge of Mrs. Councill Cooke, was as follows: Prayer, Mrs. Jim Councill; song by club, "More About Jesus"; Scripture reading, Matthew, 5th chapter; topic for iscussion, "Hospitals in Korea"; this was discussed by Mrs. Joe Crawford and Mrs. Grady Farthing; Life of Jane Adams, by Mrs. Fred Aldridge. After the program the president took charge and new and old business was discussed. The class voted to help the Alice Stanbury Circle with a rummage sale. The club meets in October with Mrs. J. A. Muilins, with Mr: Paul Coffey in charge of the progi am. North Carolina farmers are showing a great deal of interest in the soil erosion control program in connection with the CCC camps. CLASS RINGS! WILLIAM TRU'LETT DIES 1 I Mr. William Triplett, 73 years old, J died at his home in the Mount Ver- j nun section Wednesday from the ef- , fccts of a parlyt.ic stroke. Funeral services were conducted on J Thursday at the Hampton graveyard , and the body was intercd there. Rev. R. C. Eggers, pastor of the deceased f i preached the sermon. Mr. Triplett was well known and highly respected in his neighborhood | where he had been a member of the I Baptist Church for 53 years. Especial;I mention was made at his funeral of1 his fondness for little children 'and ] he had reared one orphan child. The widow is the only immediate survivor. i j MHS. FRANCIS MILLER Mrs. Francis Miller died at herj j home near the head of Meat Camp j Creek last Wednesday evening' at the age of 80 years 9 months and "6 j days. Early in life she became a member cf the Lutheran Church and remained faithful to her vows until death called her to join the Church I Triumphant. | Her husband, William Austin Mil| ler, preceded her in death in 1899. i She is survived by six children, sixty | grandchildren, sixty great-grandcKii!
