PAGE SIX | SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON By REV. ROBT. H. HARPER PARABLES OF THE KINGDOM Ircsson for December 17: MaJthew 13:3-8. 31-33, 44 46 "Things on earth are but a shad- ; ?w of the heavenly. and men have tried to go from what they knew to Vkhat they knew not. Jesus il'us-; tratod the kingdom by f am iliathings?birds, lilies, fields, the ordinary activities of men. He told the disciples he used the parable t help the people liiider stand hi- teachings, and to lead them, to investigate the truth further In the lesson aie the parables rt the &" , . , Mustard Seed. Leaven. Hidden Treasure. Pearl of Great Vriee. Tite first illustrates the several kinds of hearers of the gospel. The seed is food. All depends upon these.! The Mustard Seed shows how great things come front littie. In less than three centuries, the cross Of Jesus was lifted above the Roman eagles, while now the kingdom is spreading to the islands of the sea. The Leaven indicates the spread of the kingdom in the ways of society and the hearts of men. The remaining parables teach the | supreme value of the kingdom. Men must give up everything to enter it. But they are not really called upon to give up anything that is good. They are to give it the proper place. Thev must seek first the kingdom of God. So good men should have a sense of proportion. They must set firs; things first. And if inordinate af j lections make anything into an .idol, the would-be disciple should | Ray in the language of one of the hymns: "The dearest idol I have known, whale* Vt that idol be; help j me to 'car i: from Thy throne, and! worship only Thee."
