A GOOD NEIGHBOR
_ Lesson for December 8. Luke 10:5
" 37: Golden Text. Luke 10:27
A certain lawyer asked Jesus
question intending, if possible,
confusi the Master. But Jesus tur
ed the tables, became the questio
er arid drew from the other a \vi
answer concerning the great cor
n-and in the law .
Then, as the lawyer was broug
to fare that command, "desiring
justify himself" and pretending n
to know* the scope of his cbligatio
he said, "And who is my neighbor
In answer Jesus told the story
the Goo 1 Samaritan.

' of pure benevolence. When both

: and ministered lovingly unto him.
a When Jesus had told the story he
to asked, "Which of these three proved
n- neighbor unto him that feil among
n- the robbers?" The lawyer could nut
se but answer, "He that showed mercy
n- on liirn."
Thus did the Great Teacher lead
hi the lawyer to answer his own questo
lion. Further, the plain teaching of
of the story is that our neighbor is the
n, man in need, whom we must love
'!" and serve, whether he lives in the
of house next door or in a hut beyond
the sea. This leaves no room for
m doubt as to the scope of our duty
a as good neighbors and it sets before
=- us a privilege so broad in its range
to that we can never lack the oppor s.
tunity of being good neighbors, of
e- reaching loving hands of helpfulness
toward some needy man somewhere.

Census Is Completed
For Reapportionment
Washington. Dec. 2.?The nrnaic'
bureau tabulated the final 1940 census
figures yesterday and computed
flat probable apportionment of congressional
seats for the next decade.
: The results were reported to the
President today and made public by
the White House.
It is learned that the revised total j
of the April 1 population of the 48 >
states and the District of Columbia I
was slightly higher than the 131.409,831
preliminary estimate issued by
the bureau about two months ago.
On eapitol hill, the apportionment
figures were awaited for their possible
effect on the future careers ol
individual congressmen.
Reapportionment on the basis of
the present 435-seat size of the
house and the mathematical formula I
used in 1S30?the procedure so far
favored by congress?may switch a
number of seats.
On the basis of the preliminary
figures, which are not expected to |
change much, California appeared to j
have won two more seats than the.
20 she now holds. Other indicated >
gains were: Arizona, from 1 seat to J
2 scats; Florida, from 5 to 6; New j
Mexico, from 1 to 2; North Carolina, |

and Tennessee from 9 to 10.
The indicated losers of seats were
Illinois, from 27 to 26; Indiana, from
12 to 11; Kansas, from 7 to 6; Massachusetts,
from 15 to 14; Nebraska,
from 5 to 4; Ohio, from 24 to 23;
Oklahoma, from 9 to 8, and Pennsylvania,
from 34 to 33.
North Dakota had the lowest percentage
of accidental deaths of all
states in 1939.
