It does really seem that the habit
of totin' a gun has become prevalent
to an alarming extent in this coun
try. It is nothing unusual, right
here in the village, to hear a volley
of shots at the dead hours of night.
We are told that shooting has been
carried on after church services
right in this community within the
past week. A young man, or old&i
one eithtr, who would attend church
with a gun on his hip, not only ex
hibits his cowardice and lack of
good training, but deserves the most
severe punishment at the hands of
the law.

Mistletoe May Mean
Messenger of God
Some say that the word mistletoe
comes from the missel thrush, a
messenger of the gods who brought
the plant to the earth. Actually, tne
bird is very fond of the berries and
Is responsible for the wide distribu
tion. Growing as it does, on trees
as a parasite, it is showy because of
its huge mass of dense light green
foliage.
Its Latin name, Phoradendron,
means tree-thief.
In Virgil, mistletoe was the golden
bough, by the plucking of which
Aeneas was enabled to descend into
the underworld and return safely.
In ancient Britain it was the sa
cred plant of the Druids. The chief
nature festival of these forest wor
shippers was around the oak tree
with the most mistletoe on it. The
Arch-Druid ascended the tree to the
lowest bough on which the sacred
mistletoe was growing. With a gold
en sickle he cropped the branch and
allowed it to fall in a fold of his
ample robes. The plant was so sa
cred that it must never touch tha
earth. The priest then broke the
bough Into many pieces and gave a
twig to each of his followers with
a prayer.
In the language of the flowers, mis
tletoe means "give me a kiss." This
has its basis from a Scandinavian
myth.

, Cove Creek has not been so suc
cessful with its basketball games
this year owing to conditions be
yond our control. Two games were
scheduled for last week, one at
Cove Creek with Riverview was
called off becausc of dangerous con
ditions of roads, and one scheduled
with Bethel Friday night was called
off because there were no lights at
Bethel.
Three games are scheduled for
this week: Monday night at Lansing;
Wednesday night at Cove Creek
with Cranberry, and Friday night at
Cove Creek with West Jefferson.
Both boys' an(J girls' teams hope to
play each schedule.
The December issue of the Waco
vian is scheduled to be ready for
distribution December 19. A varied
table of contents suggests an inter
esting paper, and many of the illus
trations will be in color, which fact
also suggests an added attraction.
The staff would like to recognize
the outstanding work of two of its
members, Ruby Nell Reece and
Junior Potter, m making the color
cuts possible.
Mia-term examinations are sched
uled to be given Dec. 19 and 20.
Carols Replace Heathen Songs
Carols, it is said, were early in
troduced by the clergy into England
from Italy, probably soon after the
Norman conquest, as a substitute
for the Yule and Wassail songs of
the heathen origin, which, until then,
had bees in use among the vulgar,
Christmas carols were in dance
measure at first. The word carol
comes from "corolla," a ring, be
cause the song was for a ring dance.

County Has Huge Job
Ahead on Home Repair
More than $452,000 is expected to
be spent during the next live years
by Watauga county home owners on
remodeling and repair work.

timates released by the Title Coun
cil of America. "Few developments
will contribute more to employment
and general prosperity in any
community," according to R. E. Jor
dap, chairman of the council's resi
dential construction committee.
Because of lack of materials and
manpower during the war, majority
of the county's 4,146 dwelling units
are in need of some kind of repair
or remodeling work. Kitchen im
provements and modernization of
bathrooms , installation of tiled
showers and in some homes addition
of a second bath top the nation's list
of most wanted major improve
ments, Jordan said.

Green Valley 4-H Club
The 4-H Club of Green Valley
school met in Mr. Moretz's room
Dec. 4. Because of sickness, the
president was not able to attend, and
the vice-president, Earlene Jackson,
called the meeting to order. The
secretary read the minutes of the
previous meeting, following which
the vice-president turned the meet
ing over to Mrs. Hamby, who show
ed us how to make a Santa out ol
an orange, a wreath out of a coat
hanger, and a candle holder out of
a piece of wood.*
