RESUMPTION OF PARKWAY PROGRAM EXPECTED SOON The outlook for early resumption of construction on the Blue Ridge Parkway is bright. Representative Zebulon Weaver of Asheville, de clared in Washington Saturday aft er conferring with National Park ?ervice officials on the program. Plans for the 485-mile scenic highway, designed to link Shenan doah and Great Smoky Mountains National parks with an all-weather motor route, hve been resumed at Washington and at regional Nation al Park service headquarters in Rich mond. Construction ws suspended following Pearl Harbor. Weaver pointed out that although it was necessary to temporarily halt all non-essential construction dur ing the war, he and his associates in terested in the parkway have not been idle. He joined with colleagues seek ing similar scenic routes in their respective areas in obtaining last year a $30,000,000 authorization, '666 Cold Preparations Liquid Tablets, 8 air*. No ft* Drops. When the war caused suspension I of construction work, Weaver found an available balance of about $200, ! 000 was unspent. He sid this amount is still available and will be added , to new appropriations expected to be made early next year. Weaver is awaiting consideration by the house and senate appropria tions committees of the interior de partment appropriation bill. He ex pects to appear at hearings, slated to begin in January, to testify in' favor of appropriations to make pos- , sible early resumption of construc- ] tion work on the parkway. _ i A total of 163 miles of the 485 mile route have been completely paved and open to traffic. About 153 additional miles have been grad ed, covered with rock for subsurface and made ready for paving. Al len, regional director of the National Park service, at Richmond, and Sam Weems, superintendent of the Blue Ridge Parkway at Roanoke, are now being carried forward plans for eventual completion of the scenic route. The Blue Ridge Parkway, to be come the longest new road set up as a single unit in the entire American highway system, will be the result of comprehensive planning by the National Park service and the states of North Carolina and Virginia. Extending through an area 3,000 foet above sea level or higher, it will provide, over the entire route, the invigorating summer coolness and healthy, dry atmosphere of the high mountains. Not only will the route link two of the nation's historic, famous and interesting national parks. It will also extend through George Wash ington, .Jefferson and Pisgah na tional forests, where proper forestry practices over the years will pro duce an unspoiled natural beauty so typical of America's woodland area.
