For wage and salary earners this
will look something like a raise.
They'll take more money home on
pay day.
The first post-war tax law, enact

sponsors to stimulate business in the
reconversion period and create jobs.
It is the first general tax reduction
law since President Hoover put his
signature to a "Christmas" present
slash in 1929.
The new law provides special in
come tax treatment for veterans of
World War ?. It erases federal
levies on wartime service pay of
enlisted men and gives officers
three years to settle tax accounts
with the government.
It repeals the $5 use tax, effective

On Friday, D?c. 31, "The Awak

Charles Dickens' "A Christmas

departments.
The third edition of "Blowing
Rock Breezes" was issued on the

with drawings especially appropri

The school reopened on Monday,
Dec. 31st, with fair attendance. Due
to the "flu" epidemic and bad roads,
many pupils were unable to attend.
Many of the school boys and girls
took part in various types of Christ
mas programs in their own churches
during the season.
The young people of Blowing
Rock sponsored a dance in the
school gym on Dec. 22. It proved
to be a very successful and enjoy

The lunch room is artistically
decorated for this week with bright
and attractive "New Year's Greet

New Deadline Set For |
Army Re-enlistment
January 31. IMC, is ,n Important
date tor many men, Lt Lindsay
commander of the U. S. army re
cruiting station at Lenoir, announc
ed today. There have been several
new chance* in the put few days,
the Lieutenant said, and they affect
quite a few of the men who have
recently been discharged, or are
?till in the army. The new changes
?re as follows:
Men now in the army have until
Jan. 31, 1046, to re-enlist and retain
their present grades.

tre, giving him a choice of almost
""y theatre our troops were in.
???re?are Plenty of reasons for
re-enlisting, the lieutenant pointed i
out, for never before has the army
offered so much in all its history A
summary of them will give an idea!
of the advantages and benefits, said
Lieut. Lindsay.
A man re-enlisting within 20 days
retains his grade at which discharg
ed- To most men that means a lot
By re-enlisting for three years he
can pick the branch of service in
the air, ground or service forces,
and, in addition, can choose the over
seas theatre he wishes to serve in.
If a man re-enlists within 90 days
after discharge, he will receive $50
for each year he has served, or for
tne time he served since last such
bonus was paid. This adds up to a
tidy sum for quite a few men.
Family allowances will be in force
for the term of his re-enlistment.
Under recent legislation, the
benefits of the G I Bill of Rights
have been extended to include the
man who re-enlists, giving him all
the advantages after the term of his
enlistment is finished.
o^U.fo?d; clothe-, quarters, medical
and dental care are supplied him.
A man re-enlisting has a chance
to learn any of 200 ski Us and trades
at no cost, and will be paid while
learning.
If he re-enlists within 20 days, he
will have a furlough, from 30 to 90
days, depending on length of for- 1
nZ fservi^e- with transportation
paid to and from home. This does
not affect the regular 30 days of
furlough, he is privileged to have i
while in service, each year.
Also, if a man desires to make
the army a career, he can retire aft
er 20 years service at half pay, or
after 30 years at three-quarters pay
There are few jobs that offer so
much security for the future as a
Job with the amiy. in addition, ev
ery three years an enlisted man re
ceives a raise in pay, and it is au
tomatic, making a nice increase to
the base pay. A job that goes right
on and pays an increase each three
years is hard to get.
Lt Lindsay, in announcing the
new changes in re-enlistment, also
stated that he had made a change in
the policy of the recruiting station
?a special service to the men living
in outlying parts of this district and
on farms, who are unable to secure
prompt bus or other transportation
to Lenoir. If a man wants to enlist
or re-enlist in the army, or wishes
to have information concerning it
he can contact the U. S. army re
cruiting station, postoffice building
Lenoir, N. C., telephone 744, by let
ter, phone or in person, and an army
recruiter will contact him by special
army vehicle, and transport him to
the recruiting station, or give him
the information he desires. A man
may, to save time, enlist the same
day he comes to Lenoir, if he so de
sires.

Happy New
Year
Yes, it is with happiness and confidence that we crash
i
. the threshold of a New Year. ?
Happiness in the fact that once again the world is at peace and free to re
sume its peace-time role of producing the things necessary to the peace
and happiness to those that inhabit it.
Happy because of the small part we have played in the crises of the past
years..
Happy because you, our many friends, have shown so much consideration
and taken the many disappointments and with so much understanding
and without complaint.
Confidence in our country and our leaders.
Confidence in our industry to produce the things we have waited so pa
ntietly for.
Confidence in the co-operation of our personnel to serve you courteously,
efficiently during the year to come, and your confidence in ourselves, in
spired by the loyalty of our many friends and customers who, despite the
many disappointments of the past year have kept their confidence in us
and showed their appreciation for the effort we have made to serve you.
o
Yes, we start the New Year with happiness
