Strip Cropping is Great Soil Saver Anyone who doubts the value of strip cropping on rolling land should visit V. E. Coltrane of Guilford cwunty. says Frank Doggett. exten sion soil conservationist at State College. Strip cropping not only saves soil but it also helps to greatly increase crop yields. Coltrane produced 74 bushels of hybrid corn per acre on one of his, strips last year as com- j pared with about 20 bushels of open pollinated corn under the old meth-j od of up and down" hill, as was the case several years ago So enthusiastic is Coltrane about strip cropping that he maintains that he will soon be able to make 100 bushels of corn per acre and "not stpin his land." The fields on the Coltrane farm are planted in strips, alternately to row crops and soil building legumes. "If the soil and water break away on the cultivated strips, it is caught by the crop strips, and the water seeps into the ground instead of run ning off," says Coltrane. 'Then the cover crops are turned under, mak ing the soil loose and as porous as blotting paper. I believe that witn this practice I am building at least one-half inch of topsoil on this land a year. "The sod waterways in these fields furnish a surer crop of the finest kind of hay. I don't have to buy extensive seed every year and I don't have to take the time and expense of preparing a seed bed. I also don't have to buy fertilizer ev ery year to get hay crops. I have that time and money, and also the land, to grow legumes for soil build ing purposes '"Hie string-row method has help ed me increase tobacco yields. The soil conservation service is due much credit for introducing these new practices." r At the Churches METHODIST Communion service Thursday eve ning at 7:30. FIH8T BAPTIST R*r. J. C. Canip*.
