The needy, aged and blind persons will receive $5 more a month in Federal contri butions and S3 a month for de pendent children. This makes possible, under Federal-State matching, a maximum of $50 a month for aged needy and blind persons and, $17 a dependent child. # ? *1 RESERVES If Congress approves the Arm ed Forces Expansion Program, the Army expects to receive back on active duty 20,000 re serve officers in the first eight months of the next fiscal year, volunteers and will not be order- I ed back into uniform. In a belated report on the wind-up of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Ad ministration, it was . revealed that this country contributed slightly more than seventy-three per cent of the $3,998,418,830 made available to the agency by various nations for immediate post-war relief. AIR SAFETY RECORD Figures released by the Na tional Safety Council show that 23 airlines through last year com pleted more than seven billion passenger miles without a single fatality to a passenger or crew member. A twenty-fourth line ? Pan American Airways, Inc., ? was honored for completing 1, 443,699,000 passenger miles be tween August 3, 1945 and June 19, 1947 without a fatality. BOND CASH -INS UP Cash-ins of Series E Govern ment savings bonds during May topped new purchases for the second consecutive month. Cash ins totaled $316,000,000 which gave them a $9,000,000 edge over new purchases. INSTALLMENT DEBT Americans went $1,282,000,000 deeper into debt on the install ment plan during the first six months since time-payment con trols died last November, reach ing the highest point in history ? $6,736,000,000 at beginning of May. Total consumer credit also reached a record high of $13,596, 000,000. [ The 1948 Tar Heel peach crop will be down about one-third from 1947 production. Groundwork is being laid for Demonstrations, exhibits and sales which will be an integral part of the Fair. The Fair is an educational ven ture to show the highest stand ards of the regional crafts and to help the buying public to appre ciate the difference between poor and well made articles. Many different crafts will be demonstrated in the ten or more tents which will dot the fair area. Among these will be spinning, carding, vegetable dyeing, weav ing, textile decoration, glass blowing, leatherwork, wood car rhetal, jewelry, metal enameling, pottery (hand built and wheel work) rug making, quilting, basketry, chair making, broom making, and native crafts. Never befpr? in this Southern Highland Area has there been such a variety of crafts to be seen in one place. Never before has a person had the opportunity to see and talk with as many crafts men in one place. In addition to the crafts men tioned, the fair will feature some of the finest of folk dancing and folk music. This feature of the Craftsman's Fair, is to be in charge of Mrs. George Bidstrup of the John C. Campbell Folk School of Brasstown, N. C.
