LOCAL AFFAIRS Mr. L. D. Rupert of Balm wasl a recent patient at N. C. Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem. Mr. Henry Horton of Miami. Fla., was a visitor last week with his father, Mr. H. W. Horton of Boone. Mrs. George Timmons and daughter, Laura, of Winston Salem are visiting their mother, Mrs. H. F. Ingle. Mr. and Mrs. Hayden Fox of Oak Ridge, Tenn. are spending this week with relatives in the county. Miss Edith Odom left Sunday for Leaksville, N. C. where she has accepted a position as high school librarian. Miss Martha Jane Quails left Sunday for Greensboro, where she will enter Women's college of the university of N. C. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Ward of Reeae announce the birth of a daughter, Panzie Diann, ??? September 13, at Watauga Hospi tal. Miss Rebecca Boone left Sun day for Greensboro where she is a member of the faculty at Guilford high school during the current term. Miss Carolyn Ingle and Miss Laura Judy left. Saturday for Greensboro where they will en ter Woman's college of the Uni versity of N. C. 0 Miss Ann Smith, daughter of Prof, and Mrs. A. R. Smith, left Sunday for Queens College, Char lotte, where she will enroll for the fall term. ( Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Nash and daughter, Lenore, arrived m Nashville, Tenn., Monday, where Mr. Nash will do a year's grad uate work. Fur ill Miller of Washing ton, D. C. and Miss Mabel Greene of Deep Gap were visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Willie Greene of Lax on recently. Among those leaving Boone last week for the University^ North Carolina were: Fred Councill; W. B. York, Jr.; Grady Moretz, Jr.; and Jim Cook, ' Mrs. A. J. Anderson and daughter, Miss Patricia Ander son. of Greensboro spent several days last week with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Payne. Mrs. Faye Templeton of Deep Gap spent the week end with her husband, Staff Sgt. Howard H. Templeton, in Washington, D. C. Staff Sgt. Templeton is with the Army Air Force there. Mrs. Inez Ellis of Washington, D. C. spent last week in the home of Major and Mrs. John H. Thomas. She is visiting this week with her sister Mrs. J. C. Sher wood of Bristol, Va. Staff Sgt. Russell Greene, who is a patient at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D. C., recently spent a 15-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Greene of Laxon. Mr. and Mrs. M. H. Edmond son of Bel Air, Md. are spending several weeks with Mrs. Edmond son's sister, Mrs. R. L. Bingham and Mr. Bingham, and with other relatives in the county. Miss Stella Sherrill left last last week for North Wilkesboro where she will teach this winter. She was accompanied by her mother, Mrs. John Sherrill, who will spend the winter there. Lt. and Mrs. V. E. Jewell of Shelby and New York City are spending some time with rela tives here. Mrs. Jewell is the former Miss Mary L. Hendrix and is a granddaughter of Mrs. Alice Hardin. Mr. and Mrs. William F. Mc Leod have returned to Wake Forest after spending a part of 4heir vacation with Mrs. R. H. Hardin and relatives. Mr. Mc Leod is a third year law student at Wake Forest College. Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Harris, Sta cy Harris, Mrs. W. W. Parish and son, Rickie, of Charlotte, and Ml* Dora Jolly of Wilkesboro, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Bill Rush. Mrs. Harris is Mr. Bush's mother. Born to Mr. and Mrs. S. Roger Matthews at St. Leo's Hospital in Greensboro last Thursday, a son, who has been named Roger Hardin Matthews. Mrs. Matthews was the former Miss Jacqueline Hardin, daughter of MrS. R. H. Hardin and the late Dt. Hardin of Banner Elk and Boone. Midshipman Carr (Jack) White ner of the U. S. Naval Academy left on his return to Annapolis today, after spending a month with his parents, Dr. and Mrs. D. J. Whitener of Boone. After fin ishing his first year's work at the Academy, Mr. Whitener, aboard the battleship Missouri, visited Portugal, France, Africa and Cu bs, on a vacation cruise. 1 MRS. HAROLD OSBORNE Miss Imogen* Phillips And Harold Otboro* Arc Married Of interest her was the mar riage of Miss Imogene Phillips, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Phillips of Toliver, N. C. and Harold Osborne, formerly of Myrtle Creek, Oregon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lillard Osborne of Ashland, N. C., which was sole mnized September 3rd, at 2:00 p. m .at North Wilkesboro. Elsie Foster, Justice of the Peace, officiated using the double ring ceremony. The couple entered the room together. The bride wore a blue ballerina length dress with braid embordery with black accessories with a shoulder bouquet of fleur naturelle rosebuds and satin ribbon. The bride, who is the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Phil lips, graduated from Elkland high school in 1945 and attended Appalachian State Teachers Col lege. Mr. Osborne attended Riverview high school. Friday Afternoon Club Metis With Mrs. D. J. Whitener The Friday Afternoon Club was entertained in the home of Mrs. D. J. Whitener, with Mrs. J. D. Council as joint hostess, on September 17. A s the custom is, the attendance was large and the spirit of personal friendship and mutual interest stimulating. The entertainment feature of the day was a report by Cadet Jack Whitener, Annapolis Naval Aca demy, of his recent Atlantic cruise, in line of duty, making stops in France, Portugal, Cuba, Algeria and many other points. Jack delighted the club with his superior stage manner and characteristic human interest stories. He likes southern France best, but his homeland more than all the others. Mrs. Kenneth Linney, invited guest, became the center of in terest when the hostesses pre sented her with a beautiful breakfast service; the members of the club showered her with good wishes. The rooms were beautifully decorated with flowers of the season. Dainty refreshments con sisting of a salad course and a sweet course brought the meet ing to a close. Miss Bonnia Ward Is Brida Of Mark E. Ollday Mr. and Mrs. Council A. Ward of Reese announces the marriage of their daughter, Miss Bonnie Ward to Mr. Mark E. Gilday, son of Mrs. Marguerite Gilday of Elgin, Illinois. . The young couple were mar ried at Christ and St. Michael's Episcopal church of German - town, Philadelphia, Pa, with the Rev. Hamilton Auhlenbach giv ing the nuptial service. They were attended by Mr. and Mrs. DeWitt W. Temple of Philadel phia. The bridegroom's mother made the trip to Philadelphia to be present at the ceremony. The bride wore a lovely royal blue dress with grey accessories and had a bridal corsage of white roses and narcissus. She wore a beautiful navy blue suit and red accessories for her going-away ensemble The coupla will honey moon in Now York, and after wards make their home at 420 19th St., N. K., In Washington, D. C Mrs. Gilday graduated from Bethel high school, Sugar Grove and attended Womens College, Greensboro. She is employed in the Department of Interior, Washington, D. C. Mr. Gilday, who is a veteran of the U. S. Army, with service n the Aleutians, is employed in the Department of Arimr in Wash ington, D. C-, and i# enrolled at the Benjamin Franklin Univer1 sity there. Faculty Dunn Club Holds Mm ting Mrs. David Hodgin, Mrs. Her man Eggers and Mrs. Lee Rey nolds entertained the club at the Faculty Apartments. Mrs. John Bardan was elected president following the resignation of Mrs. Chapell Wilson. Mrs. Benjamin Horton and Mrs. J. F. Leek were welecomed as new members. As this was the first session of the year Mrs. Hodgin, chairman of the program committee, dis cussed the programs of the year which will have as their theme "Phases of the South." Mrs. War man, Mrs. Rankin and Mrs. Thompson opened the study with talks on the "Natural Resources of the South," "Southern Towns and Cities" and "Rivers of the South." Their interesting dis cussions represented both thought and research. The club had as a special guest Mrs. Joe Crawford who enter tained the group with an ac count of her recent visit" to Jekyll Island off the coast of Georgia. During the social hour the hostesses served a sweet course. Mrs. Kanntth B. Linncy Showar Honor** Mrs. G. K. Moose, Mrs. J. E. Holshouser and Mrs. W. M. Matheson were hostesses at a dessert bridge and surprise mis cellaneous shower at the home of Mrs. Matheson last Thursday evening honoring Mrs. Kenneth B. Linney, recent bride. Arrangements of asters, glad ioli, delphinnium and roses were used throughout the home, and a corsage of white roses was pre sented the honoree. Covers were laid for 40 guests. During the evening bridge was played and prizes awarded the winners, Mrs. Joe Crawford, Mrs. R. E. Kellcv a-?d Mrs. Jack Hodges. A color note of green and white was carried out in the re freshments which consisted of cake, ice cream, punch and mints. Dinner Given In Honor Of Mr and Mrs. Linn*? Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Hayworth entertained last Friday night at Black Bear Inn, West Jefferson, at a dinner party in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth B. Linney, who were married recently. Attractive place cards were used, and white dwarf chry santhemuis decorated the dinner table. A corsage of white roees was presented the bride and corsages of pink roses were pre sented the other women guests. Mr. and Mrs. Linney received an honor gift of crystal. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Linney, Mr. and Mrs. Hay worth, Dr. and Mrs. W M. Matheson, Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Coffey, Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Rivers, Mrs. Jennie Critcher and Miss Clyde Kilby. Miss Georgia Ayers Honored At Party Mrs. G. C. Norris, Jr. enter tained at her new home on Queen Street Saturday night at an informal party in honor of Miss Georgia Ayers, whose wed ding to Conrad Melvyn Yates will tafce place Sunday, Septem ber 28th at the First Bapu?t church. The living room and dining room was decorated with beau tiful fall flowers. Three tables of bride were in play. Delicious re freshments were served by Mrs. Norri^ assisted by Mrs. George McKmicher. Friday Afternoon Club Holds Meeting ' The members <pf the Friday Afternoon Club and several ad ditional guests spent a most de lightful afternoon when Mrs. E. ^ -* i". : MISS. NANCY WILCOX Mr. and Mrs. D. L. Wilcox an nounce the engagement of their daughter, Nancy, to Julian Ra gan, son of Mrs. W. H. Ragan and the late Mr. Ragan of Todd. The wedding will take place November 25. S. Coffey and Mrs. Nell Linney [entertained on Friday, Sept. 10.1 Informal conversation was en joyed, followed by a tour of the| lovely new Coffey home. Mrs. Remmel Porter, assisted! by Mrs. Linney, presented most entertaining program of Dr. E. Z., in which members and guests took part. Mrs. Charles Keerans was declared winner of the prize, a box of note paper. The hostesses, assisted by Mrs. Porter and Miss Anita Winkler, served a delicious salad course with coffee, followed by a sweet course. Guests other than club mem bers were Mrs. Carrie Coffey of Greensboro, Mrs. Charles Keer ans and Mrs. A. R. Smith. Worthwhile Club To Meet At Skyline Restaurant The Worthwhile Woman's club will meet at the Skyline Restaurant on Thursday evening at 7:30 o'clock for the purpose of electing officers. All new and old members are urged to be present. Worthwhile Members Attend District Meeting Ten members from the Worth while Woman's club attended the Third District meeting in Taylorsville of the North Caro lina Federation of Women's clubs. Members attending are as fol lows: Mesdames W. G. Bond, B. W. S tailings, R. W. Watkins, Roy Rufty, D. L. Wilcox, J. M. Moretz, T. Len Cooke, N. G. Ernes ton, H. B. Perry, Jr. and R. L. Tait. Mrs. R. W. Watkins, President of the local club, serving on the place committee invited the third district to meet in Boone next year. The date of the meet ing has not been arranged but probably will be during the second* week in September of next year. Robert Foster Honored At Birthday Party Mr. Robert Foster enjoyed a birthday party last Sunday afternoon. Mr. Foster, who was 20 years old was given a surprise party by his Sunday School class. Rev. R. C. Eggers read a few verses of scripture and gave a short talk. A. E. Moretz also made a short talk, after which there was prayer. The ladies of the W. M. V. of Meat Camp church served re freshment^ to all who were pre sent. The young folks played games and everyone had a good time. Although Robert is con fined to his wheel chair he is al ways cheerful and loves for people to visit him. He received many useful and nice gifts. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Greene, Mr. and Mrs. John Greene and children, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Gragg and daughter, Judy, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Clawson and son, Kenneth, Mr. and Mrs. Austin Clawson and children. Rev. R. C.
