He was presented with the coveted silver wings of a quali fied paratrooper at the gradua tion ceremony on Oct. 22. Dean J. Norris, seaman re cruit, USN, son of Ottie J. Nor ris of Vilas, is undergoing re cruit training at the world's largest Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, 111. Pfc. William R. Winkler who has been located at Wichita Falls, Texas, is spending the week with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. R^ Winkler. On his return he will report to El Paso, Texas, for fur ther duty. Pvt. James H. Benfield, son of Mrs. Mary Pennell of Blowing Rock, writes that he likes Japan very much. He is stationed near Toyko with the U. S. Army. In August, 1946, Congress decided that many old treaties with Indian tribes which gave the United States lands west of the Ohio had not always been obtained fairly and set up a Commission to hear claims and hand down decisions ? with both Indians and the Government re taining the right to appeal to U. Crippled by paralysis of both knees for 24 years, Mrs. Blanche Andrus, 60. of nearby Gillett, Pa., managed to walk again this summer. She is back in bed again, however, having suffered fractures of both knees when the car in which she was ridding with her husband ran into a pole to avert hitting another auto. Her husband was not injured. By 1946 farmers were spending three times what they 3pent in 1936 for medical care. Drawing is Given ( County Library ? ? An original drawing by Lois Lenski, one of America's out- ] standing author-illustrators of , children's books, has been pre sented to the Watauga County Library and will be on display at the library headquarters in Boone during Book Week, Nov ember 14-20. ' The drawing is a pencil sketch and was reproduced in Miss Lenski's book, "Blue Ridge Bil ly." The material foi1 the story and the sketches made by Miss Lenski were the result of her stay in Ashe County. Lois Lenski has written and1 illustrated with humor and] charm many books for boys and] girls. Her recent books have been regional stories: Bayou Sozette (Louisiana), Strawberry Girl (Florida), Judy's Journey (Mig rant farm workers), Boom Town Boy (Oklahoma). Miss Lenski offered her ori ginial drawings for Blue Ridge Billy with its North Carolina setting to the libraries at the state. The Watauga County lib rary drawing will be framed and hung permanently in the library, it was announced by Mrs. f. K. Warman, president of the library board. BOX SUPPER There will be an old fashioned box supper at Bethel High school Saturday night, Nov. 13th at 7:00 p. m. The proceeds will be used for the Home Economics department.
