Main St. BOONE, N. C. General D. Watson Dies Winston-Salem General D. Watson, 57, resi dent of ' Deep Gap, died in the Baptist hospital, Winston-Salem, last Thursday, after an illness of 34 days. Funeral services were held Sunday at the Mount Paron church in the home neighborhood, by Rev. Roscoe Greene, and in terment was in the Watson cem etery. Surviving are the widow and the following sons and daugh ters: Arnold, Deep Gap; Odus, Laxon; Russell, Deep Gap; Mil lie, R us ton, La.; Arthur, Deep Gap; David Watson, Boone; Mrs. Levi Watson, Mrs Blakely Wat ion and Mrs. Ethel Watson, Deep Gap. Frank Linney Roark Is Taken by Death Frank Linney Roark, 34 years old, an electrician of Beaver Dam township, died last Satur eral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Forest Grove Baptist church by Rev. Lawrence Hagaman and Rev. Ed Farthing, ana interment was in the church cemetery. The father, Emmet Roark, sur vives, with five brother* and three sisters: Lee Roark, Wichi ta Falls, Texas: Lloyd, George, Ernest, Russell Roark, Vilas; Mrs. Floyd Hagaman, Boone; Mrs. Floyd Warren and Mrs. Ralph Reese, Vilas. Woman's C1*J? Hold* Art, Musk Contest The Music And Ait Department held an art arid music contest in Uw> basement of the Boone Bap tist church Monday night. May 9. All the members 01 the de partment were on committees to arrange and work out details of the contest and helped with it, under the direction of Mrs. H. B Perry, Jr., president Of the club. Dr. Harry E. Fritz, who was, until his retirement, superinten dent of the Fine Arts Program in the public schools of New York for thirty-seven years, made a talk on art. Mrs. Perry said the contest was a success and received a good response from the schools and citizens of the county. There were approximately 300 draw ings. all of them exceptionally flood and showing promise of ta ent. Winners in the music division Were as follows: Two first prizes in the elemen tary division went to Fvankie Coffey of Itui Boone Demonstra tion school, who sank "Anniver sary Song," and to Milton Bard en, singing "Prayer of the Nor wegian Child." Second prize went to Shirley Withrow of the Boone Demon stration School. She sang "Al ways." Third prize was awarded to Betsy Rogers of the Deep Gap School for her song, "Chocolate Drop." Peggy Whittington of the Wa tauga Consolidated School won fourth place with the song, "The Broken Heart." The two first place winners in high school went to Katie Sue Farthttig of Cove Creek High School who sang "Soldiers Song, and to Donald Warm an, singing "On the Road to Mandalay. Second place went to Shirley Madron, Cove Creek High school, with the song "I Love Thee." Winners in the art contest were as follows: First grade ? 1st prize prize, John Ralph Buchannon, Boone Demonstration school; 2nd, Jane, Blowing Rock School; 3rd, Betty Moretz, Rich Mountain school. Second grade ? 1st, Julia Mae Sluder, Valle Crucis school; 2nd, George Reece, Valle Crucia school; 3rd, Louise Combs, Cove Creek school. Third grade ? 1st, Cecil Porch, Valle Crucis school; 2nd, Jimmie Swift, Valle Crucis school; 3rd, Rebecca Sue Farthing, Bethel. Winebarger Dies on Meat Camp After several months of de clining health, Mrs. O. G. Wine barger of the Meat Camp com munity died early Saturday morning. May 14. Funeral serv ices were conducted Sunday morning at eleven o'clock at Pleasant Valley Methodist church, Dr. John G. Harden in charge. Burial followed in the family plot in the cemetery near by. Mrs. Winebarger was a devout Christian. She was loved by all who knew her, and her helping hand will be missed by the en tire community. Her death is mourned by everyone. Emma Rogers Winebarger, daughter of Wade and Lou Rog ers, was bom near Boone May 24, 1887. She was married to O. G. Winebarger on September 5, 1905. In 1013, with her husband, she joined Hopewell Methodist Church. In 1923 she transferred her membership to Pleasant Val ley and became a charter mem ber of the Pleasant Valley Meth odist Church of which she was a most loyal member throughout the remainder of her days. She gave of her time and means to the work of her Master wherever she could. She is survived by her hus band, O. G. Winebarger, three sons and two daughters: Dayton, Woodrow, Worth, Gladys, Mrs. Ernest Moretz), and Gertrude (Mrs. Arlie Proffitt), all of the Meat Camp community;; 12 grandchildren, and one great son. (Contributed) James B. Hix Dies Banner Elk Sunday James B. Hix, 76 years old, a resident of Rominger, died at the Banner Elk hospital last Sunday following a brief illness. Funeral services were conduct ed from the graveside in the family cemetery Tuesday after noon by Rev. Monroe Presnell. Surviving are three sons and three daughters: Martin and Ber ney Hix, Beech Creek; Clinard Hix, Rominger; Mrs. Sherlin Presnell, Beech Creek; Mrs. Lan der Hix and Mrs. J. M. Presnell, Rominger. JAMES STAFFORD LOVE ? James Stafford Love two months old son of Mr. and Mrs. David Love, Jr., of Durham, died May 11th at the Watts Hos pital Durham, where he had been in an incubator since birth Feb. 20th. Funeral services were held May 12th at Durham by Rev. Pearce, pastor of the First Bap tist church. Burial followed at the Ward cemetery on Brushy Fork May 13th. Graveside ser vices were held by Rev. Beach * Succumbs at Age 65 William MeHenry Beach, 65 years old, resident of Boone, Route 2, died at Watauga Hos pital Friday evening following a long illness with a heart ailment Funeral services were conduc ted from the Bethel Methodist Church Monday afternoon by Rev. Ernest Moretz, and Rev. Mr. Stephens and interment was in the church cemetery. The widow, the former Miss Ethel Norris, survives, with two step-daughters: Mrs. Beulah Mc Knight, Indianapolis, Ind., and Mrs. George Sembell, Spring field. 111. Four brothers survive: L. E. Beach, Lenoir; M. W. Beach, York, S. C.; Carl Beach, Lenoir; Tom Beach, Boone. Mr. Beach was a son of the late Allen Wilson Beach and Mrs. Beach, and was reared in Wa tauga county. He went to the Northwest in 1907 and spent 17 years in agricultural pursuits in the states of Washington and Ore gon. He lived in Springfield, 111., for 20 years, where he en ?aged in machine shop work, ince his retirement in. 1944 he has lived on his farm on New River. ? Germany remains key point in the program of Soviet Russia.
