proximately ?#% of the area of
the county la tn wood* yet the

amount* to a very small perccnt
of the farm income. Moat of this
woodland is extremely sleep or
rocky and should remain in
timber permanently. Such land
should be managed to give
greater returns Just as w* man
age our cropland and pasture.
There are several ways that
farm woodlandr. can be improv
ed and made to yield far great
er returns to the farmer. Improv
ment cutting which leaves the
more desirable species of trees,
pays great dividends in faster
growth and a better grade of
lumber. Selective cutting of
mature trees enables the farm
er to remove the mature timber
and releaae the smaller more
crowded ones by giving them
more sunlight. Such cuttings in
sure sales of timber with only
the mature ones being removed
at a given time. This keeps a
good condition in the woodland
at all times. Removal of mature
trees enables young seedlings
to germinate if all ages of trees
are found in the woodland.
Protection from grazing Is an
Important step in a good wood
land program. With livestock
grazing through the woods the
young trees, vital to the repro
duction of the woodi, are eatetf
and trampled into the ground,
leaving the area bare when ma
ture trees are cut.
In a forestry program the Soil
Conservation Service also stress -
es the need of reforestation of
the steepest and more eroded
areas of the county. There is still
time to order seedlings for
planting such areas. With the
T. V. A. providing the young
trees at no coat to the fanner,
this is an ideal time for refores
tation.

THOUSANDS MORE
TELEPHONES IN 1950
1990 was another bit telephone year in North Carolina.
Southern Bell installed 68.252 telephones . . . nearly
enough to serve another city the size of Charlotte and
Gastonia combined.
The big job. however, was makins new telephones
possible by constructing and enlarging buildings, in
stalling central officc equipment, building lines and'
stringing wire and cable. In all we spent more than
SI2.S0u.000 last year to expand and improve North
Carolina's telephone service
Today Nortli Carolina has twice as many telephones
?s were in servicc at the cod of World War II . . . almost
twice as many long distance circuits . . . almost three
times as many rural telephone*. That's mighty impot
tattt right now as the nation mobilizes for defense.
In the days ahead. Southern Bell can be counted on
to dc to fuil part in defense ? in Nortli Carolina and
thrffghout the South.

Two great facta stand out in modern social thought ? the poten
tialities of youth and the obligation resting upon the older generation
to turn these hidden powers into safe and useful channels.
In some countries youth and childhood are -exploited to foster
political, aims and bolster the power of totalitarian dictators. Such
organizations desecrate youth and add to the pain and confusion of
the world.
The Boy Scouts organization exis a to biess and strengthen youth
itself. It seeks to develop character by inculcating the principles of
truth, honesty, integrity and faith. It builds strong bodies through
healthful outdoor exercises.
* Religion is the safest guide in human living. Boy Scouts are taught
to respect and reverence religious faith, to attend Church and put their
trust in God. Scout troops seek to translate religion into practical living.
The Boy Scouts organization i* a potent factor in combating ju
venile delinquency. The scouts are taught to be true to God and their
country, to keep themselves morally clean and physically strong. What
more could a parent ask for his boy?
THE CHURCH FOR ALL . . .
ALL FOR THE CHURCH
The Church is ,Ke freaiest (actor on earth for
the building pi character and food citizenship.
It is a storehouse ol tpir.tual values Without a
strong Church, neither democracy nor civilisation
can survive. There ore iour sound reason* why
every person should attend services regularly
and support the Ch'irch. They are: (I) For his
ovrr. sake. 12) For his children'* sake. (3) For the
sake of his community and nation (4) For the
rake ol the Church its*)!, which needs his moral
and material support. Plan to go to church regu
larly and read your Bible dally. '
