Mr. Boone visited Monday with Mr. and Mrs. Charles Boone in Durham, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Boone in Burlington, and Miss Rebekah Boone in Greensboro. Mr. Arthur G. Thomas of Lewiston, Idaho is visiting with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Thomas at Mabel. En route here he visited his brother, Dewey J. Thomas and family, Wasco, Ore.; relative* and friends at The Dal le*, Ore.; Lenoir and Morganton, N. C. Mr. Thomas notes a great difference in the weather. In parts of the west, he says, there is *ix to ten feet of *now, and here, the ground bare, and the weather warm. Woman's Club In January "Meeting . The January meeting of the Bbone Worthwhile Woman'* Club was held on Thursday, Jan uary 24th in the Oateway Cafe. Hostesses were Mrs. Dempsey Wilcox, Mrs. Gordon Winkler, Mrs. Wiley Hartzog, Mrs. Homer Brown, Mrs. L. E. Henderson. Mrs. Lee Reynolds presided. Mrs. A. E. South reported the Lions Club supper a success Mrs. Gordon Winkler reported 433 children gifted from the Empty Stocking Fund, and read ap preciations expressed by teachers as well aa youngsters. Nominating committee of of ficers for the com\pg year were elected: Mrs. Dempsey Wilcox, Mr*. Wiley Hartzog, Mrs. A. E. South, Mrs. Coiinie Phillips, and Mrs. George Greene. The club ai a whole wishes to expreaa its appreciation to Mrs. A. E. South for her work as aong leader in the colored school. Nineteen of the children gave ? radio program on the 24th, at our new radio time over WATA, which is 1:45 p. ra. each Thurs day. The feature was a solo by a little 10 year old girl. Sherry Grime*, who sang "Ave Maria." On Thursday, January 31, a re cord of our club song, made by Mrs. H. B. Perry, Jr. at the Methodist organ, will be played. Mrs. Paul Graff spoke on "Reaelutlon* of the Woman's Club Convention*." Captain Carlos DeLima gave ? talk on "Dafenae." Woman's Club banquet will be held on March 37. ? MR. AND MRS. CECIL FARTHING Miss Mary Carolyn Hayes Becomes Bride of Mr. Cecil Farthing Miss Mary Carolyn Hayes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Hayes of "Vilas, became the bride of .Cecil Farthing, son of Mr. Ed Farthing and the late Mrs. Farthing of Boone, on January 26, in the Mt. Lebanon Church at Vilas. Rev. Edwin F. Troutman pas tor of tye Grace Lutheran Church of Boone, performed the cere mony. Mrs. Edwin F. Troutman, pianist, and Jerry* Troutman, soloist, presented the program of wedding music. The couple entered the church together. The bride wore a win ter white street length dress of wool jersey knit with black ac cessories. She wore a purple throated orchid corsage. Her on ly attendant was Mrs. Lawfore^ Critcher of Boone. Rhea Farth ing, of Winston-Salem, served as his brother's best man. Ushers were Roger Wilson and J. G. Wilson, both of Boone. The church was decorated with sevfcn branched candelabra and white gladoli. Mrs. Farthing graduated from the Cove Creek High School of Sugar Grove, and is now em ployed by the Southern Bell Telephone Co. here. Mr. Farthing graduated frofn the Appalachian High School of Boone. He is now employed by the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home of Boone. After a short wedding trip the couple will make their home in Boone. Mrs. Erneston Named To Voice Tutors Asbn. Word was received here re cently that Mrs. Elsie H. D. Erneston, voice instructor and choral director at Appalachian High School, was elected to mem bership in the National Associa tion of Teachers of Singing. This organization affords prestige tc/ its members; only teachers of widely diversified experience are elegible for membership. Mrs. Erneston is a former voice stud ent of H. Caleb Cushing of the Shenandoah Conservatory of Music, and Harrison Christian, former Metropolitan opera coach. She was a student in choral con ducting of John Finley William ion of Westminister Choir School. She sang as soloist for four years with the Shenandoah A Capella Choir, during which time she appeared as soloist in Carnegie Hall. She was also solo ist with the Christ Episcopal Church in Cincinnati, Ohio, und er the direction of Parvin Titus, nationally known organist and director. She has sung soprano solos in Handel's "Messiah" and Bach's "St. Matthew Passion" for the past 16 years with varioUI choral groups. Since coming to Boone in 1948, Mrs. Erneston has directed the three choruses at Appalachian High School, winning ratings of "excellent" each year in the dis trict contests. She alio taught voice at A. S. T. C. in 1949 and 1950, and has been Minister of 'Music at the James I. Vance Presbyterian Church for the past four years. Mrs. Erneston holds a Bachelor of Music degree in vocal and choral instruction from the Shen andoah Conservatory of Music and will complete Master of Arts degree at A. S. T. C. in Febru ary^ ' Hodges Gap Club Met January 18 The Hodges Gap Demonstra tion Club met January 18, at the home of Mrs. G. C. Hodge^ The demonstration was how W pre pare quick easy meals. Holds Meeting Friday The Valle Crucis P. T. A. met Friday night, January IS, The meeting was called to order by the president, Rev. A. C. Mondy. After a short busineaaemeeting the following program wat pre sented: Rev. Ralph Miller, pastor of Valle Crucis Methodist Church conducted the devotional. His measage centered around Christ ian Activity in Everyday Life. He emphasized the importance of Christian training in the home. Christians must enter into every day activities and lift them up or else they are guilty of the sin of omission. An interesting movie "That Boy Joe" was shown. It ijginted out that juvenile delinquency in most cases starts in the home. Following the film an interesting and informative talk was given by Mr. Dave Mast, county wel fare superintendent. The welfare department aims at continuing and keeping family and ho?e life intact. He closed by saying that the children of today and tomor row will be carrying us forward, if forward we go. Ruthervfood P. T. A. The Rutherwood P. T. A. met January 24 at 7:30 p. m. Che president, Mrs. B. D. Clawson (called the meeting to order. The group joined in singing, "Onward Christian Soldiers" followed by Bible reading and prayer. Mr. Jack Idol talked on the March of Dimes now being car ried on in our county. An offer ing was taken for the March of Dimes. A movie, The Old South and The New South and film strips showing Bible scenes was enjoy ed by everyone present. "SMOKY" GOES TO SCHOOL Carson City, Nev. ? While Mary had a.littl^lamb that fol lowed her to school, Bobby And erson, 8, has a pet raven, "Smoky" who flies right up to the door arid, on occasion, flits right in Bobby's classroom. Winkler enter tained at a dinner party at her home last Friday evening hon oring Miss Carolyn Hayes and Mr. Cecil Farthing, who were l married at Mt. Lebonon Baptist Church at Vilaa. N. C.. Saturday evening at 7:S0 o'clock. A bridal motif was used in the table decorations. Guests included Miss Carolyn Hayes, Mr. Cecil Farthing, Mr. Ray Farthing, Mrs. Lawford Critcher, Miss Florence Measick of Winston-Salem, Mr. Jerry Troutman, Mr. Ed G. Farthing, and Rev. and Mrs. Edwin F. Troutman. Green Valley Home Club Meets The Green Valley Home Dem onstration, Club met at the home of Mra. Wade Clawson on Jan uary 25. Due to the abaence of the president, our vice president, Mr*. Troy Norris, presided. The meeting b^gan with the singing of -''America," followed by the re peating of the collect, the read ing and approval of the minutes. The secretary was asked to write our president. Mrs. Clyde Wil liams, a letter of encouragement and offer our help to her. Her daughter, Miss Jane Williams, is seriously ill in th* Watauga Hos pital. We ar? sorry to lose four of our club members: Mrs. John Clawson. who has moved away, Mrs. Clint MiUer, Mrs. Walter Coffey and Mrs. Ferd Michael, who have joined the new club which has been organized in their community. However, we are happy to have Mrs. Forest Greene join our club. We filled out our "Year Book" for 1952 and feel that we are go ing to enjoy every program. Mrs. Hamp Clawson resigned as treasurer and Mrs. Billy Byers was elected to fill out the remain der of the year. After the business session the meeting was turned over to Mrs. Betty Edwards who gave us an interesting demonstration on "Quick and Easy Meals." She prepared "Pork Chops with Rice" which was not only delicious but nutritious as well. A beautiful party dish was served to those present by Mrs. Clawson and daughter, Lois. Wal ter Mclnnes, a friend for many years, John James Galloway, 78, collapsed arid died. MR. AND MRS. ANDY GREER Mr. and Mrs. Andy Greer Celebrate Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Andy Greer of Vilas, will celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary on Febru ary 2, when it is expected that moft of the eleven sons and daughters will be present. Mrs. Oreer is the former Miss Nannie Greene of Mabel. The sons and daughters are: Fred R. Greer, Cleveland, Ohio; Henry, Stanley, James, Billie Greer; Mrs. Clay Greene, Mrs. Grady Minton, Mrs. Ronda Earp, Mrs. Archie Dancy, all of Vilas; Mrs. J. W.
