Junior- Senior Held At Blowing Rock Queen's Contest is Held; Winners in Blowing Rock Talent Show Given. By MRS. LUCIM! LE?T The Junior-Senior banquet of Blowing Hock high school was held in the school gym on Satur day evening, March 22, at 7:00 o'clock with some 80 persons at tending. The affair was formal, the set ting the scene of a night club, "The Top-Hat Club." The gym was decorated in green and white, the school and senior class colors. Tables, each seating four persons, were cover ed with white linen dtoths cen tered with a green ctndle. Place cards, as well as the invitations, in the shape of a hat, were of green edged in white, with white ribbon at the top, and gloves and cane outlined in white. Mints were served in individual cups. The dinner was served by can dle light with a spot turned on the entertainers. A floor show was held during the evening consisting of several vocal numbers, piano solos, guitar numbers, and a dance act. Girls serving as waitressea made up the chorus line. During the course of the even ing four toast* were given: to the ben tort by Theda Holder with response by Billy White; to the facility by Kathleen Triplett with response by Mrs. Glenn Winkler; to the fchool board by Martha Gragg with response by Mr. Shuford Edmisten; and to the ministers by Martha Penley with response by Rev. J. L. Thomas, Jr. Master at Ceremonies was Mr. James Storie, school principal, and the invocation was asked by Rev. Thomas C. Seiti. Mrs. Kathleen Hodges, junior sponsor, directed arrangements for the banquet, assisted by Mrs. Belle Greene, co-sponsor. Students taking part on the special program were Ted Dot son, James Coffey, Nola Gragg* Mary Tolbert, WiUia Belle Col fey, Kathleen Coffey, Lucy Brad shaw, Edith Storie, Theda Hol der, Audrey Hollars, Evelyn Craig, Barbara Coffey, Marie Hodges, Ellen Hamlett, Martha Penley, and Christine Greene. Queen's Contest And Talent Show Is Held A queen's contest and talent show were held on Friday morn ing in the school auditorium. Names of the contestants for the queen of the Elementary school were previously a n n o u n*c e d. Those vieing for the honor in the high school were Anne Lett and Caroline Greene of the freshman class; Peggy White of the sopho more class; Theda Holder of the Junior class; and Ruby Moody of the Senior class. Winners in this contest were Theda Holder in the high school and Sylvia Patrick of the Ele mentary school. There were 21 numbers in the talent show consisting of solos, duets, group singing, also guitar, harmonica, and xylophone num bers all emanating from the Ele mentary grades. Winners in the talent show were Jane Brown of the fourth grade who sang "Give Me A Kiss To Build A Dream On;" Donna jSflMijnci F"iank Tcague of the ?Hpttftl who sang % Want A 4MMF>Just Like The Girl That Married Dear Old Dad"; and Dianne Hodges and Ruth Luttrell of the first grade who sang "Oh Suzanna." The winners will compete with other winners in Watauga county schools in an elimination con test to be held in Boone, the date to be anounced. Directors for the entire pro gram were Mrs. J. D. Whitener and Mrs. Jay Beach of the Ele mentary faculty. Judges were Mr*. Herman Ij gen, Mrs. A. E. South, and Mr. Jack Mock of Boone. P. T. A. To Mm! The Blowing Rock Parent Teachers Association will# meet on Tuesday, April 1, at 7:30 o'cloA in the school auditorium with Mrs. Charles Davant, presi dent, presiding. A musical program will be given under the direction of Mrs. Margaret Reineking. Following the business meet ing a social hour will follow with refreshments being served in the school cafeteria. Music Appreciation Club Moots The March meeting of the Blowing Rock School Apprecia tion Club was held in the school library, with SO' students pre sent. All students had parts on the program. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 1 in the teach ers' library and the program will feature studies in coral music and the lives of the masters. The Club's next study will be by Bach led by Judy Burns. Mrs. Charles Brown is director and Mrs. Glenn Winkler is spon sor. Attending Pre-School Clinic Mooting Mrs. Yoder and Mrs. Whitener, first grade teachers, and Mrs. Charles Davant, president of the school P. T. A. will meet with Mrs. EdmistQn, county supervi sor, and the personell of the health department on Wednesday, March 26, at 1:00 p. m. in the courthouse assembly room. Purpose of this meeting Is to plan the schools pre-school clinic. Bulletin Board The bulletin board decoration in the lower hall of the school building for the month of March is under the direction of Miss Francis Snyder of the high school faculty and her freshman class. The board depicts the inven tion of' Benjamin Franklin and is illustrated by a figure drawn on the board representing Frank lin holding the strings to five kites on which are the words Coperation, Knowledge, sports manship, social values , and friends. ? Attend TMchu'i Meeting A large delegation from the Blowing Hock school expects to attend the teachers meeting in Asheville on March 27, 18, and 29, including Principal James Storie. Mrs. Hollar's Second Grade A surprise birthday party was given to the second grade last week by Mrs. Ed Coffey honor ing her son Jimmie who was eight years old. , Daniel Coffey had a birthday March 20. ? ? Our grade was invited to see television last # Thursday after noon at the home of Mrs. Clyde Clawson. Many of the class had never seen television and we all likedsit very much. We came back to school wishing we could all have television sets. We like Conard Greene's house on wheels. We think Ann Moody looked so pretty in her white evening dress for the queen's contest and tal ent show last Friday. We are glad to have our sick folks back in school. Our room bought flowers for the funeral of Steve Ashley's four-months old baby sister who died last week. We were so sorry about little Amy Lynn. The par ents are Mr. and Mrs. Neal Ash ley of Middle Fork on the Boone road. Mrs. Brown's Fifth Grade We enjoyed the nice cookies and candy our grade mothers, Mrs. Gene Lent?, and Mrs. Bun Knight sent us last week. We appreciate their thoughtfulness toward us so much. Kent Miller has been absent from school two days this week with flu. We are sorry because he hadn't missed a day of school this year. Two of our class members moved away last week. Rosa Mae and Paul Ellis. They have gone to West Virginia to live. We were so sorry to lose them. The senior play cast has been selected by Mrs. Wilson and practice has begun. The play will be presented Friday evening, Ap ril 11, in 'the high %chool audi torium. Reverend Harold Songer, pas tor of Cove Creek Baptist Church, will preach the baccalaureate ser mon in the Henson's Chapel Church, Sunday evening, May 11. The senior class program will be given and diplomas awarded to the fifty-four graduates on Fri day night, Maj? 16. This program will also be held in the Henson's Chapel Church. Mr. Jay Fox and Miss Bagwell of Appalachjan State Teachers' College are doing their practice teaching with Mrs. Horton and Mrs. Davis this quarter.
