C. 2-14-eow-c Homecoming At Blue Ridge Held By MRS ?W. B. ESTES Our home coming at the Blue R'dge Advent Christian Church was a success in spiu of the down pour of rain. About ten o'clock we ventured out to the church. People came from Le noir, Boone. Winston-Salem, and Avery county, as well as hosts of people from near by points. The Rev. S. E. Gragg brought the morning message which ev eryone enjoyed. Rev. Mr. Gragg was pastor of this church for 32 years. At the age of 91 he is still very active. After a bountiful dinner we went back and heard a wonder ful message by the Rev. Lawrence Daye. His talk was "The Great Home Coming When Christ Comes." A number of other ministers had a part as well as the singers. The day was really worth while and was surely enjoyed by all. Tfjere was about one hundred and fifty people out for the day. Our pastor, the Rev. Mr. Hon eycutt, taught part of the singers from Lenoir. We want to wel come everyone back the fourth Sunday in August next year. Mr. and Mrs. G. L. Holder of Bakersville were week end visi tors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Patrick of Blowing Rock. We are sorry to know of the sick of the community: Mrs. Roe Harrison, Mrs. J. C. Church, Mr. W. H. Gragg. We wish them speedy recovery. Blue Ridge Fair Continued from page onel until 6 p. m. 19. Gragg and Coaches Everett and Leroy Rogers estimate that this sum is neceasary to raiae the standards of the Appalachian athletic program up to a safe and minimum standard. Memben of the Booster Club for the past three. years pledged to renew their memberships and also assist in a vigorous campaign to improve the athletic program at Appalachian High School, football costs $1000 mare than the usual receipts of the past three years, and large home crowds at five games will help clear this deficit. Booster Club membership costs $10, which en titles each member to season tic kets in football, baseball and bas ketball. Fred Gregg announced that the Booster Club was spon soring a variety HIU-Billy musi cal show at the Courthouse Sat urday night. This benefit is the first of many planned for the coming school year, and tickets may be obtained from Booster Club members and high school football players. Child Welfare Continued from page one) Money is provided in the budget to pay for school lunches A child's needs are not being met if he is staying out of school. Children should benefit by the ADC payment and if they do not, arrangements may be made through the juvenile court for suitable placement of the child ren. A new welfare policy which became effective July 1, 1932, requires the agency to promptly notify the proper law enforce ment officer of. the name and ad dress of any parent whose fam ily is receiving ADC because of that parent's having deserted or abandoned his family. The names of a number of parents have been reported to ti>e solicitor in this district. The county, state, and federal government share in financial payments to needy children who have been deprived of parental support. Beginning October 1, the federal share will be four fifths of the first $15 of the state's average monthly payment per person. The federal govern ment will pay $12 out<of the first $1$ and the county and state each pay $1.50. In the amount of money payment per person above the $15.00, the federal govern ment will pay one-half and coun ty and state each one-fourth up to the maximum of $30 for one Tuberculosis Enemy Of Youth By FRANCES C. FRANCIS One widespread but dangerous fallacy about tuberculosis is that older people (hi not get the di. seasa because it occurs primarily among the young. It ia true that tuberculosis is the leading cause of death from disease among young adults between the ansa of I 19 and 44. Yet the proportions of I deaths from tuberculosis among Americans over 45 years of age has been steadily increasing in the past few years. la 1047, for the first lime more than half the persons who died of tuberculosis in this country were over 45. This fact does not necessarily mean that people over 46 are more susceptible to tu berculosis than younger people. The larger number of death*, in comparison with other age groups, may be explained by the fact that people are living long er today and that tuberculosis treatment is more efeetive to day than it was 30 years ago. Moreover, the decrease in deaths from tuberculosis Ijas been more rapid among the young than among the older groups. But the number of deaths from tuberculosis among people over 43 does prove that no age is safe from the- disease ? that reaching the age of 45 does not mean a person has "outgrown" the possi bility of getting tuberculosis. Hence, those who think they no longer need take precautions against tuberculosis or check on the health of their lungs because they are 45 years of age or over are taking foolish and unneces sary chances. Regular physical examinations, including chest x rays, are important for* all adults, no matter what age group. The disease has no obvious symptoms in an early stage, but periodic medical examinations and chest x-rays give a person his best chance of detecting the disease, if it strikes, in a stage when it is easiest to cure. GOOD TAX NEWS Richmond, Va. ? Virginians re cently received good news from their Governor ? they'll get an other State income-tax reduction this year, amounting to nine per cent, which will apply to both in dividual and corporation returns. Last year, Virginians received a twenty per cent cutback. child, or the maximum of $60 for one child and a needy t-elatlve and $21 for each additional child in the family. s. \ m NO MONEY DOWN! ana only 1.25 a week PUTS 4 BRAND NEW GOODAiAR TIRES e Don't rhk riding on dick, dangerous Hr#?l e Trad* 'om NOW for now Goodyoar firoti e Ub?ral trado-in ollowa mo; toko month* to p?y I Swof ford's Tire Store BOONE.
