were presented to Watauga 4-H
members who completed projects
and turned in records at Achieve
ment Day, November 8.
* Farmers used more corn for
silage in Watauga this year than
in any previous year.
Southern Bell Telephone Com
pany completed a telephone line
from Boone to Deep Gap. A total
of 69 phones were connected on
this line.
A recent report shows that ap
proximately 300 people west of
Boone have signed up, and paid
all or part of membership fee ask
ing for rural telephones in this
urea.
Four Watauga county farmers
secured seed from N. C. Founda
tion Seed Producers and produc
ed W. Va. 1183 hybrid seed com
ih 1952.
Six Watauga farmers had esti
mated corn yields of more than
100 bushels per acre.
The Green Pasture committee
recommended "Letters of
Achievement" in pasture work to
five Watauga farmers and "Green
Pasture Plaques'' to seven Wa
tauga farmers in 19S2.
Watauga county farmers pur
chased a total of thirty -five reg
istered beef type bulls in 1952.
Hammond Hampton and H. J.
Sheeler brought the first register
ed Aberdeen-Angus bull, that we
know of in the past ten years, to
the county.
The Watauga county purebred
Hereford breeders sold cattle in
all the state Hereford sales, and
also in two sales in Virginia,
namely, Tri-State Sale, Bristol,
and Virginia Hereford sale, Dan
ville, Virginia.
Mr. Dave Minton purchased an
outstanding herd bull prospect
from Dan Lynch at the Tazewell
Hereford sale in 1952.
Finley P. Hodges and Son
showed the champion Hereford
bull and the champion Hereford
cow at the 1952 Blue Ridge Fair.
Forty-three purebred rams
were purchased by Watauga com
mercial sheep producers in 1952.
Two Watauga purebred Hamp-*
shire sheep breeders purchased
stud rams in 1952. R. G. Shipley
purchased his ram from W. F.
Benk & Son, Sun Prairie, Wis
consin, and Norris Brothers se
cured theirs at the Staunton Stud I
Ram show and sate, from Lawaon
and Muss. Burkes Garden, Vir
ginia.
R. C Shipley showed the cham
pion Hampshire ram at the North
Carolina State fatf in 1952.
Norri* Brothers had the cham
pion ram and R. C. Shipley the
champion ewe at the Blue Ridge
Fair.
Watauga county purebred sheep
breeders consigned sheep to all
the itate purebred sheap sales in
1952. ' '
Ralph Wilson purchased a good
Poland China boar from Joseph
Tooge in 1152.
The Watauga 4-H livestock
judging team placed second in
the state contest in 1952.
Many" dairy farmers construct
ed silos in 1952.
About 83% of Watauga county
dairy cows are being bred to
purebred bulls.
One hundred ten farmers had
one hundred seventy-two horses
and mules treated in the work
stock clinics in 1952.
The unit test demonstration
farm committee added enough
farms to make the total for Wa
tauga 25 at the end of the year
1952.
Five tours were held on unit
test farms in 1952.

people on the tour.
The Boone Purebred ram sale
averaged $106.20 per head, on 22
head. The top price was $160.00
per head for three rams, all con
signed by Watauga breeders.
The Watauga Lamb Pool sold
2,824 head of lambs and sheep for
$58,577.77.
Eight Watauga 4-H club mem
bers exhibited 18 lambs in the
Tri-County Lamb show, at Spar
ta, N. C., June 5, 1952.
Vance Vines and Dudley Norris
took first and second places in
the registered lamb class in the
4-H show. i
The Watauga Wool Pool sold
34,945 pounds wool for $18,315.35.
The Boone Feeder Calf sale
sold 214 graded calves and 24 un
graded calves for a total of $26,
449.31.
Sixteen farm owners or 4-H
club members ordered 32,000 tree
seedlings in 1952.
A 4-H poultry chain was start
ed in Watauga county in 1952.
In October a 4-H poultry show
and sale were held. One hundred
eight of the pullets sold for an
avera jgrice per bird of $2.23.
