News of Servicemen SERVING IN J AH With the 1st Cavalry Division la Japan ? Pvt. Carl R. Critcher, ?on of Mr*. Kred R. Crltchcr. Boom, U now wrving in Japan with the 1st Cavalry Division. The 1st Cavalry is giving inten sive field training to replace ments on the Japanese Islands. The 1st spent 17 months in the combat tone before being rotated out of the line In December 1991. World War II veterans will re member this same division land ed at Lingayen Gulf on Luzon, Philippine Islands in early 1M? and raced south to help liberate Manila. American prisoners of war held at Santo Tomas Univer sity were freed by an advance column of the 1st Cavalry. A rifleman in his unit, Critch er entered the Army last July. Before bis overseas assignment he was stationed at Port Dix, N. J., with the 9th Infantry Division. IN KOREA With X Corps In Korea ? Army Pvt. Bobby Ads ma, son of Ralph Adams, Vilas, N. C., recently ar rived In Korea and is now serv ing with X Corps. A tactical command between divisional and Army level, X Corps is one of three corps in the combat zone. Special units at tached to it perform duties for some or all of the combat or ganizations under it* command. Private Adams has been assign ed to the 73rd Engineer Combat Battalion. He entered the Army in June 19S2 and was stationed at Port Leonard Wood, Mo., before his assignment in the Far East. IH CARIBBEAH MANEUVERS Camp Lejeune, N. C. ? Marine Pfc. Jefferson D. Miller, 24, hus band of Mrs. Carylon Miller, Zionville, N. C. is participating in an extensive Marine Corps training exercise in the Caribbean area. The operation, designated at LANT TRAEX III, is being conducted on several islands of Puerto Rico. Miller is serving as an am munition carrier during the cur rent maneuvers. He Is a member of the 2nd Battalion, Tenth Mar ines, a unit of the Second Divi sion. He entered the Marine Corps in April, 1952. Rebuilding Korea School With The 7th Infantry Division In Korea ? The contributions of a Boone, N. C. soldier and his bud dies are helping rebuild a war leveled Korea school. Master Sgt. Charles L. Michael, son of Mrs. F. H. Michael, Route 1, and other members of the 12nd Regiment are giving part of their monthly pay to the building fund. The money is being used to build a new school in Pochon, one of the hardest-hit cities in the Republic of Korea. A city of 35,000, Pochon had 123 classrooms before the Korean outbreak. Now it has only four. Michael, a platoon sergeant in th? Heavy Mortar Company, ar rived in Korea Lajt August. Since eutering the Army in November IMS, he ha* been awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Korean Service Ribbon with one campaign (tar. PVT. KERMIT DACUS. son of Mr. and Mrs. K. I. Dacus of Boone, who is presently with the 101st Airborne Division at Camp Breckenridge, Ky. Pvt. Dacus, a graduate of Appalachian High School, entered the army Janu ary 1, 1953. IN KOREA Marine Private First Class John F. Greene, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Murray Greene of Route 1, Boone, is now serving with the First Marine Division in Korea. Greene entered the Marine Corps in May 1952 and was pro moted to his present rank upon completion of his recruit training at Parris Island, S. C. Prior to his overseas assign ment he completed a special in fantry training course at Camp Pendleton, Calif. Greene is a former student of Appalachian High School and was employed by the Highlander Mo tor Co., in Boone prior to enter ing active service with the Leath IN BOOT TRAINING Pvt. Albert A. Minton, son of Rev. and Mrs. Grady Minton, of Vilaa, is now taking boot training at Fort Jackson, S. C. The address of Private Minton, who is a graduate of Cove Creek High School, is: Pvt. Albert A. Minton, US531532S9 Co. D, 28th Inf. Regt. 8th Infantry Division, Fort Jackson, S. C. SERVES II YEARS M-Sgt. Conley Kirby, former ly of Watauga county, who has ' been in the army for 18 yean, is 1 now stationed in Tripoli, Libya, North Africa. Sgt.
