Youth Week Observed At Oak Grove Church Youth Week was observed at Oak Grove Baptist Church, dur ing April S through April 12. Ap proximately 45 of the young peo ple of the church took charge of all church functions for the week. Officers for the week were j Howard Hodges and Howard j Barnes, pastors; John Ward, I Chairman Board of Deacons; Joseph McNeil, Sunday School Superintendent; Mrs. Kathleen Ward, music director; Mrs. Betty Jean Hughes, pianist; Dorothy Hodges, secretary; Glenn Miller, Training Union director; Alma G. Hodges, church clerk; Bill Hod ges, brotherhood president; and Mrs. Mildred Lancaster, W. M. U. president. The associate pastor, Howard Hodges, began the week by con ducting the evening service on April 5. Monday night the dea cons met and discussed the work of th? week, then on Tuesday night they met again with the building committee to discuss thf building of the parsonage. The ground was staked oft where the parsonage is to be built The building is to be started imme diately. On Wednesday night the youth had charge of the Brotherhood and W. M. U. organizations that met, also prayer service and church conference. Friday night all the young peo ple assembled at the church for choir practice and afterward for a fun and fellowship hour. On April 12 the youth pastor, Howard Barnes, brought a very Why The Church Of Christ Is The New Testament Church 1. You can read about it in the New Testament. (Rom. 10: 16). 2. It has no creed but the Bible, binds no name on its mem bers but Christ's. (I Pet. 4: 16; Acts 11: 26). 3. It speaks where the Bible speaks, and is silent where the Bible is silent. (I Pet. 4: 11). 4. It exalts Christ as the ONLY head of the church. (Col. 1: 18). 5. Its acts of worship are patterned strictly after the New Testament example. (Jno. 4: 24; Acts 20; 7; Eph. 5: 19). 6. It teaches that scriptural unity CAN be achieved on all disputed doctrinal questions. (1 Cor. 1; 10; John 17: 21). 7. The Church of Christ PLEADS for unity of all believers in Christ (1 Cor. 3: 1-5; Eph. 4: 4-6). 8. It is not a denomination, nor a group of denominations, but the body of Christ (Col. 1: 16). Its founder is Christ Himself. (Matt. 16: 18). 9. Its aim ? to save souls by leading them to Christ by the gospel, teach godly living, and help all in need. (I Cor. 15: 1-4; Gal. 6: 9). 10. Its future ? eternal glory with Christ (I Thess. 4: 17). There is a WAY which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of DEATH. (Prov. 14: 12). 1 CAN I BE SAVED OUTSIDE THE NEW TESTAMENT CHURCH? 1. No. Christ PURCHASED the Church with His BLOOD. (Acts 20: 28). 2. He is the Savior of the Body (Eph. 5: 23) and the Body is the Church (Eph. 1: 22-23). 3. Therefore, you CANNOT be saved OUTSIDE Christ's church. WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED? 1. HEAR God's Word. (Rom. 10: 11-18; John 8: 32). 2. BELIEVE in Christ. (Jno. 20: 31; Heb. 11: 6). 3. REPENT of all past sins. (Luke 13: 3; Acts 17: 30). 4. CONFESS faith in Christ. (Matt. 10: 32; Rom. 10: 10). 5. BE BAPTIZED (immersed) into Christ for the remission of past sins. (Rom. 6: 4; Col. 2: 12; Acts 2: 38; Mk. 16: 16; Gal. 3: 26-27; I Pet. 3: 21; Acts 22: 16; Acts 8: 36-38; Jno. 3: 5). Have YOU Obeyed The Gospel Of Christ? He is coming to take VENGEANCE on them who have NOT obeyed His gospel (2 Thess. 1: 7-9). Where Will You Spend Eternity? (Mark 8: 36; Heb. 9: 27). C Know Your Hospital By VANCE HOLLAND The Watauga Hospital, a non profit inatitution, publically but not goverrunentally owned, ia in corporated under the lawa of the State of North Carolina. It ia governed by a self-perpetuating board of trustees composed of public-spirited citizens who serve without enumeration. The Watauga Hospital ia ap proved by the North Carolina Hospital Association, the North Carolina Medical Care Commis sion, the Duke Endowment, the American Hospital Association, the American Medical Associa tion, and the American College of Surgeons. To meet the approv al of these inspecting agencies, the hospital must maintain a very high quality of patient care. The full approval of the American College of Surgeons is by far the most difficult to attain. In at taining this approval, the hos pital satisfied the following fund amental principles upon which minimum standards for hospitals is based: 1. A modern physical plant, free from hazards and properly equipped for the comfort and scientific care of the patient 2. Clearly stated constitution, by-laws, and regulations setting forth organization, duties, respon sibilities, and relations. , 3. A carefully selected govern ing board having complete and supreme authority for the man agement of the institution. 4. A competent, well trained ex ecutive officer or administrator with authority and responsibility to carry out the policies of the institution as authorized by the governing board. 5. An adequate number of ef ficient personnel, properly or ganized and under competent supervision. 6. An organized medical staff of ethical, competent physicians for the efficient care of the pat ients and for carrying out the pro fessional policies of the hospital, subject to the approval of the inspirational message on the youth week theme "Learn From Me." On Sunday afternoon, April 12, the young people presented a program of songs and testimon ies at the Prison Camp, also to the th^, County hoard ing Home- The week closed ApriJ 12 with the evening worsh? which was conducted by tm guest speaker, Rev. Dumont Clark, Director Religious Depart ment, Farmers Federation. This was a very profitable week for the young people as they took charge of various acti vities of the church. The program closed with everyone feeling happy over a job well done and looking for ward to Youth Week in 1954. governing board. 7. Adequate diagnostic and therapeutic facilities with effi cient technical aervice under com petent medical supervision. S. Accurate and complete med ical records, promptly written and filed in an accessible manner 10 ai to be available for itudy, reference, follow-up, and re search. 9. Group conferences of the ad ministrative staff and of the med ical staff to review regularly and thoroughly their respective ac tivities in order to keep the ser vice and the scientific work on the highest plane of efficiency. 10. A humanitarian attitude in which the best care of the patient is always the primary considera tion. The medical staff is composed of a group of men of high cali ber. Each member of the staff, whether a specialist or general practitioner, is in the private practice of medicine and does not receive a salary or any other re muneration from the hospital. The hospital employes many fine, well-qualified persons for high ly skilled technical jobs, but it must be quite clear that the hos pital does not employ any phy sicians. The hospital furnishes the re quired physical plant and equip ment as well as highly skilled, competent technical help for the benefit of the patient hospitalized here, and these facilities are al ways available to the physician. The physician-patient relation ship is exactly the same whether the patient is treated in the phy sician's office or whether their illness requires hospitalization. A brief outline of the various medical staff departments and their personnel is as follows: The Department of Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat is headed by a phy sician who has been well trained in this specialized field. A physi sian practicing eye, ear, nose, and throat in the Watauga Hospital must meet certain rigid require ments as to training and other qualifications which are set down in the rules and regulations of the governing board. As in other departments, any ethical, qualified physician who meets these standards would upon ap plication be granted privileges to practice in this specialty. General practice: The Depart ment of General Practice includes three well qualified physicians who are on the active staff, that is, these persons are responsible for certain subdepartments in the professional subdivision of hospital duties. These physicians maintain a rotating call system whereby there is always a phy sician available to the hospital for any acute illnesit which might H. Grady Farthing, pmUtnl ? Stasia? A. Harris. Thia also iuurw the public that a phy sician can be contacted through the hoepital for any emergency situation. The remainder of the physicians in the Department of General Practice are on the cour tesy staff. This does not change their relationship to the use of the hospital and its facilities. These physicians do not at pres ent have delegated staff duties. The Radiology or X-ray Depart ment is manned by two certified specialists id radiology. All x-ray films taken at the hospital are read by these men. The manage ment of this department and the training of its personnel is under their direct supervision. One or the other is present in the hos pital one morning each week for the elaborate x-ray diagnostic procedures which are done here. At this time patients may be seen for superficial or deep x-ray the rapy and convenient arrange ments made for their treatment at the x-ray therapy center in Morganton. General Surgery is under (he direction of an American Board of Surgery certified specialist in surgery. In addition this depart ment has consultants in orthope dics, neurosurgery and surgery composed of heads of these de partments in various medical schools of the state, or Otherwise eminently qualified men. Any physician who is allowed to per form an operation at the Wa tauga Hospital must have suffi cient training to meet the quali fications of the American Board of Surgery for certifications, but does not necessarily have to have been certified by this board. As in the instance of the Eye, Ears, Nose and Throat Department, any ethical qualified physician who meets these requirements would be granted privileges in surgery upon proper application and ap proval. Pathology and clinical labor atory is under the direct supervi sion of a board certified special ist in pathology. All tissue re moved at operation is examined by the pathologist and slides are made of this tissue. The labora tory technician who works in the clinical laboratory in Boone and the personnel of the tissue lab oratory in Morganton have been certified by examining boards in their field in much the tame man ner as the physician specialists are certified by boards in their specialty. The clinical laboratory and department of pathology have facilities that are similar to those in many of the larger teaching institutions. In addition to the various med ical departments, the hospital maintains certain departments of services on a very high level. The record library is headed by a medical records librarian who has been registered by the American 1 Association of Hospital Record Librarians. The nursing staff is composed of nine well-qualified, competent, registered nurses. The work of the nurses' aides and orderlies is under the supervision of the nursing staff. The staff of nurses, aides and orderlies is quite large in proportion to the fifty bed rating of the hospital. This makes ,a ratio of approxi mately two employees who give direct service to every patient. The hospital maintains a com petent engineering and house keeping staff. The meals are pre pared under the direction of a competent practical dietician. Uilder her supervision the meals have been wholesome and pala table, and almost all patients who have been hospitalized here will gladly testify as to the ex cellence of the hospital food. It is hoped that this will give you, the reader, a better under standing of the hospital, its phy sical plant and technical em ployees Ad their relation to the physician and patient who ? hoe pitallzed here. It moat be remem bered that any laboratory pro cedure, treatment or diagnostic proceduce must be ordered by and Miperviied by the petieot'i individual physician. The hospi tal stands to provide the finest facilities for the physician's con venience and for the benefit of the patient. PLANT EXPANSION Expenditures for new private plants and equipment in tha United States during 1983 will top last year's figure of $26,900, 000,000 by at least half a billion dollars. Current plans reported to the Department of Commerce indicate a total of $27,000,000,000. Hunter's Parkway Lunch HOME OF GOOD FOOD Opening Wednesday April 15 th specializing in STEAKS ? CHICKEN ?
