Your Lawn and Garden Headquarters ' Boone, N. C. Tomato Wilt Soil Problem By ROBERT SCHMIDT Anyone who tries to (row to matoes in the South is concerned with the problem of wilt There sr* two kinds of wilt which commonly affect tomatoes A fusarium and bacterial wilt ? caused by two different organ isms which are quite common in garden soils of this state. Both carried over in the soil from year to year. Fusarium wilt can be effective ly combatted by the use of wilt resistant varieties such as Home stead, Southland, and Jefferson. Marglobe and Rutgers are still very popular varieties but seem to have very little resistance to the present strains of fusarium wilt. There are at present no varieties available which are re sistant to bacterial wilt. That is why when you plant a viriety recommended to you as wilt re sistant, the plants may all die of wilt. Bacterial wilt is commonly known as Granville wilt where tobacco is grown. The emphasis is still being put on ice-box sized watermelons. The new Hampsure Midget var iety which grows to the size of a cantaloupe 'has become quite in the home garden. Hills may be ?paced as close as five or *ix feet apart A fault of this variety is that it becomes over-ripe very quickly. Another good small mel on is the Rhode Island Red var iety which will weigh about 10 to 12 pounds, on the average. It has deep red flesh and black COMING SOON! Third Annual Fishing Rodeo Sponsored by B. W. Stallings seeds. The best of them all, in my opinion, is the Japanese Seedless melon. It will average from t to IS pounds in weight, and is of excellent quality. There are sel dom more than a dozea mature seeds in a melon ? the rdR of the seeds are undeveloped and may be eatfft with the melon. Seeds for planting are quite expensive ? almost 6 cents per seed this year ? but the results are worth it Tar Heel turkey growers re ceived $9,475,000 from sales of turkeys during 19S3, about 1] per cent below 1952's record. O. 8. SPENDING CUT The Committee on Federal Tax policy has recommended cut* to taling $8,000,000,000 for the next fiscal year. Heavy slashes were urged in funds for veterans' aid, agricultural grants, social secur ity, welfare and health outlays, help to states and localities for roads, hospitals and other func tions. A manufacturer's excise tax on everything but food, clothing and medical items was suggested. Military leadership is Allied weak, from Pentagon down. L THE HOUSE OF GOD In Gal. 6:10 the church is called "the Household of faith"; and in Eph. 2:19 it is called "the Household of God." In I Tim. 3:15, this "Household" is called the "House of God"; and this is declared to be "the Church of the living God." These expres sions show that the family of God is meant; and we know that God's family includes and consists of all His children. That leaves no child of God OUT of the Church. This shows the importance of the Church, that it is exactly as important as is being a child of God. Is that important? Well, the children form the family, and the family is the Church. Therefore, it is exactly as necessary for one to be a member of the Church as it is for him to be a child of God. In Heb. 12:23 the Church consisting of God's children Is that body of people "who are enrolled (written) in heaven." Is it es sential that our names be written in heaven? If so, it is just that necessary that we be members of the Church of the Firstborn, for these are "enrolled in heaven" as "spirits of jurt men made perfect," to which company we will belong. The Church consists of and includes everything not in the world. Men belong to either the Church or the World. There is no middle ground. They are baptized OUT OF the world INTO the Church. In this Church or Body of Christ all men are "reconciled." (Eph. 2:16). Until added to the Church, all men are at enmity with God, for they become reconciled to Him only in the Church. That makes membership in the Church the equivalent of reconciliation to God. Without reconciliation men are lost, "having no hope and without God in the world (Eph. 2:12). Since the denominations are not the true Church, they are as yet unreconciled to God, for reconcilia tion is only in the Church as the Body of Christ. We enter this Church or Body of Christ only through baptism. It is through baptism, therefore, that men are reconciled to God. "He that be lievth and is baptized shall be saved." (Mk. 16:16). The value of the Church should be seen when we consider it Is that institution only which was purchased with Christ's blood. (Acts 20:28). He is said to have loved the Church, and gave Himself for it" (Eph. 5:25). He is declared to be "the Savior of the Body" which is the Church, (Eph. 5:23). He is never said to save any man out of the Church. The Church only has been "cleansed with the washing of water by the word" (Verse 26). The "word" employs water in cleansing the Church. All out of the Church are, therefore, still polluted. So teaches the Word of God. Do you believe it? Or do you fancy that men can be saved out of the Church? "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." (Acts 2:38) Those who did that were by the Lord added to the Church ? the right Church. The grace of God grants you the privilege of doing that that you *nay be saved. Will you not accept God's grace? H. ERNEST SHOAF ? BOONE, N. C. Thk b the ISM Chevrolet Bel Air 3- Door Sedan. With 3 eeriea, Chevrolet offer, a model to meet every individual and family need. These facts about the New Chevrolet can help you make' an important decision Don't you agree that buying a new car calls for careful consideration? Regardless of make, it involves a sub stantial amount of money and a lot of future satisfac tion. This information can give you a better idea of com parative value and help you decide which make to buy. A good customer of ours was telling us the other day how he sizes up a new car. Because he's bought a num ber of them over the years, we were interested in what he had to say. We think you will be, too. Actually, what he does is to ask about seven basic questions. The answers give a pretty complete pic ture of the car and its comparative value. Here's what he wants to know. How well do I Uke its looks? That's one question, of course, that only you can answer. You're the one who buys the car and you, above anybody else, should be proud of its appearance. All we can tell you is that we hear a lot of nice things about Chevrolet's new styling. People seem to like the new front-end and rear-end designs, and the way the bumpers curve even farther around the fenders. They like the new styling touches all around the car and the wide choice of bright new color* and two-tone combinations. A good many tell us that Chevrolet has a decided edge over the other cars in its field for smooth and graceful lines. Who makes the body? This question takes in much more territory than the appearance of the car. It involves the quality of the interior aa well as the strength and safety of the body construction. That's why we think it worth your consideration that Chevrolet has the only Body by Fisher in the low-price field. You can see the difference outside and inaide. We'd especially like you to look over the new interiors. Just sit in the car, if you will. Feel the quality of the fabrics and notice the more generous use of vinyl trim. ' In all these ways, you'll find evi dence of superior quality and work manship. And after all, isn't that what you | would expect in Body by Fisher? A a you know, Fisher is the largest and most famous manufac turer of automobile bodies in the world. Doesn't it stand to reason that Fisher can build extra quality into the Chevrolet body? It's then and you can see it. What's under the hood? You hear a great deal of talk these days about engine power. Hie truth is that the number of horsepower isn't nearly as important as what the horsepower does for you. In this year's Chevro'jt, you get increased power in two finer engines. There's the "Blue-Flame 126" engine teamed with Powerglide automatic transmission and optional on all models at extra cost. In gearshift models, you get the more powerful "Blue-Flame 115" engine. But, actually, the increase in horsepower is only a sort of by product of design changes made for other reasons. Chevrolet engineers were after greater engine efficiency, not just greater power. So, you get improved acceleration, with greater and "safer passing ability. You get quieter, smoother operation. You climb the steep hills with new ease. How hungry is it for gasoline? A car's reputation for, and record of, economy of operation is certainly an important consideration to most * people. We'd be glad to have you compare Chevrolet in this respect with any car at any price. And, in the case of this new Chev rolet, you do not have to sacrifice economy for finer performance and more horsepower. That's because the Chevrolet engines are high-com prettion engines. Their compression ratio of 7.5 to 1 is the highest in any of the leading low-priced cars. This means simply that the engine compresses, or squeezes, the fuel mix ture to a greater degree in order to wring more work out of it. That's how Chevrolet is able to give you an important gain in performance along with money-saving gasoline mileage ?and on regular gas, of course. la it up to dafe in featnras? We can't think of a new feature or development you might want that you can't have on the new Chevrolet. Now you can have Chevrolet'* zippy and thrifty Powerglide automatic transmission on any model. You can have Power Steering on all models and at a new, lower price. You can have Automatic Window and Seat Controls on any Bel Air or "Two Ten" model, and you can have Power Brakes on any model equipped with Powerglide. All are, of course, optional features at extra cost. How popular a car is it? When you come right down to it, there'* no better way to judge the satisfaction a car gives its owners than by its popularity. How many people buy it and keep on buying it? Well, as you may know, Chevrolet is by far the most popular car in this country. That's true today and it's been true for a good many years now. ' But it couldn't be true? or wouldn't be true? unless Chevrolet gave its owners an extra measure of satisfac tion and value. How much does it cost? There's a short, sweet answer to that one: Chevrolet is priced Mow all other lines of cars. This lower cost is made possible by the greater production facilities and purchasing power of the world's largest manufacturer of auto mobiles. That is why Chevrolet can offer you all the advantages we've told yon about here? and many mors, too. We'd be more than glad to have you see all these things for yourself and to try out this new Chevrolet on the road. We'll be happy to sea you at my time.
