BOONE, WATAUGA COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA, THURSDAY, APRIL 22, I>54 SECOND SECTION News Of The W eek At Appalachian High The seniors left Monday, April 5, on their long-awaited ?ix day trip to the nation's capitol, Wash ington, D. C. Before their return on April 10, they viaited many points of interest. Although the seniors were greatly impressed by the splend or of. the nation'i capitol, they were glad to set foot on good old Watauga's soil again. Forty-one students along with Miss Alters and Dr. Everett made the trip. Girls Hhi Talk On Nursing On Tuesday, April 13, Mrs. Charlotte Price, from Grace Hos pital in Morganton, viaited the school and talked to approximate ly 30 girls about nursing. A senior student-nurse, Miss Isaacs from Bethel, came with Mrs. Price to help discuss the work and training of nurses with the Appalachian High School girls. Mrq. Price spoke to the girls about the academic requirements for entrance into nursing, the cost of training, and the salary one can earn upon graduation after three years' study. After the general meeting Mrs. Price held conferences with a number of girls who are planning to enter nursing next year. Mrs. Margaret Gragg pointed out that Mrs. Price was brought to the school as a part of the vocational guidance offered to students during the activity per iod. This is the third year that Mrs. Price has visited Appala chian and talked with future nurses. Library Association Appalachian High School was well represented at the annual convention of the North Carolina High School Library Association in High Point on April 2 and 3. Mary Catherine Hollars, Ethel Townsend, Emma Mae Greer, Ellen Culler, Jane Snyder, and Shelby Jean Dotaon, representing the Junior Librarian's Club of Appalachian High School, were accompanied by Miss Betty Jo Henderson, Librarian, to the con vention. Mrs. E. H. Ould of Roanoke, Virginia, prominent speaker on teen-age problems, was the speak er at the opening session which was held in' the Hjgh Point Sen ior High School. The highlight of the convention was a banquet at the Sheraton Hotel Friday night, at which Mr. Dick Walser. pro fessor of English at State College, was the speaker. After the ban quet an informal daqpe was held in the ballroom of the hotel. The convention was concluded with the Saturday morning ses sion, when new state officers were elected. Gets Big B ass Palatka, Fla. ? George D. Judy, Boone, N. C, was a recent fish ing visitor at Camp George at nearby Fruitland on the famous St. Johns River and while there used a shiner to entice a 7 pound 6 ounce Florida largemouth black bass to strike and landed the big fellow. Fisherman Judy entered his catch in the Jaycee sponsored Putnam County Fishing Tourna ment. This bass was far short of being a trophy winner, but its capturer will receive an attrac tive certificate of award for his skill in landing the bronzeback. WRESTLING ? LEGION HOME, LENOIR, N. C. News From Willow Valley Section Mrs. iBert Swift of Marion, N. C. visited in this community over the week end. ?Mr. and Mrs. Gibson Ward of Dublin, Va. visited relatives in this community Sunday. Mrs. Leanord Ward returned Sunday from a visit with her daughter, Mrs. Drake Walsh of North Wilkesboro. Mr. and Mrs. Walsh are the proud parents of a baby boy. Mr. Ray Smith of Winston Salem spent the week end with his wife and small daughter. Mr. Smith is employed ai a machinist in Winston-Salem. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Rial of Charlotte and Mrs. Sam Atkins of Boone visited Sunday after noon with Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Isaacs. Mrs. Oscar Ward is recrupe rat ine ?t her home from an opera tion performed at the Watauga hospital. She has been ill for several weeks but at last she is on the road to recovery if there are no complications and her friends are mighty glad to hear this. Mr. Cannon Ward, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leanord Ward was mar ried this past week to Miss Jean Herman of Vilas. Harris Quits Realty Concern Stanley A. Harris, for the past three years connected with the Home Realty Company, has sold his interest to H. Giady Farthing and W. H. Gragg. Mr. Harris said, "I have enjoy ed the association with Mr. Farth ing and Mr. Gragg very much but I have found that I have too many other duties to give it the attention a business requires. The business of the Home Realty Company will still be in good hands for both Mr. Farthing and Mr. Gragg are experienced and capable real estate men.
