Commencement Held
At Blowing Rock High
By MRS. LUCILE LETT
La?t Friday night in the school
auditorium we saw 14 persons
receive diplomas from Principal
James M. Stnrie in most impres
sive commencement e*ercises.s
Dr. Amos Abrams, Associate Edi
tor of the NCEA Journal, Ral
eigh, brought the commencement
address using the topic, "The
Fire Is Laid." In spelling the last
word of his topic, Dr. Abrams
used the letters "Leyd." illustrat
ing the entire meaning of his
address by giving the meaning of
the words which began with
those four letters; namely, the L
stood for 'Learning,' the E for
"Earning", the Y for "Yearning,"
and last, the D for 'discerning.'
Those four words, said Dr. Ab
rams, were the four powers pre
sented to the graduate by the
use of this word. Strangely
enough, and something that hap
pends only the fewest times in a
lifetime, the topic used by Miss
Audrey Lentz, valedictorian,
coincided with that used by Dr.
Abrams ? "Striking A Match;"
thereby, completing the entire
evening's topic of address.
Steve Pierce, salutatorian, gave
the address of welcome and the
invocation was asked by Rev. G.
Carlton Cox, pastor of First Bapt
ist Church here in Blowing Rock,
and the benediction was by Rev.
Thomas C. Seitz, Vicar of St.
Mary's of The Hills Episcopal
church.
"Pomp and Circumstance," by
Elgar, rendered by Miss Margaret
Vance at the piano was used as
processional and recessional.
