Goodnight has re turned home after spending sev eral days with her sons and their families in Gastonia, Newton, and Conover. Mrs. Finley Hodges hat been discharged from Watauga Hospi tal after receiving treatment for a broken hip for the past 30 days. She is recovering satisfactorily. Rev. J. T. 'David South, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley South, returned home with his grandmother, Mrs. Bern hardt, to visit two weeks. Rev. J. T. Shackford attended the annual meeting of the Intra Conference Commission on Stud ent Work of the N. C. Methodist Conference at Duke University in Durham Saturday. Mr. Shackford preached the baccalaureate ser mon at Jefferson High School in Jefferson on May 9, and also at Parkway School on Tuesday, May 18. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Cor coran of Beverly Hills, Calif, ar rived last week for a viiit with their daughter, Mrs. L. H. Owl ley, Dr. Owsley and Tommy. They were accompanied by Mrs. Owsley's aunts, Mrs. J. F. Holoh an and Mrs. L. A. Daly, of Pitts burg, Pa , and they all attended the graduating exercises at Ap palachian State Teachers' College Friday, at which time Mrs. Ows ley received the master of arts degree in Library Science. The Owsleys and the Corcorans will leave Thursday for a ten-day vacation at Ocean Drive, S. C. Bride-Elect Is Given Honor Miss Faye Robinson and Miss Betty Barnes entertained at a miscellaneous shower, Wednes day night. May 12, at the home of Mrs. John H. Robinson, on Robinwood Road, Gastonia, hon oring Miss Lois Townsend. Miss Townsend will be married to A 1-c Bobby Joe McSwain of Shelby on July IB in Boone. Green and whit* decorations were used in the home. Mias Townsend was presented with a corsage of 'white gladiolas, and bridal games were played Re freshments were served. (Photo by Edwards) Winners Of TV Talent Show Are Announced The Boone Junior Woman's Club has announced the winners of the successful Mountain Music Makers TV Talent Contest held here last Saturday night. First prize of $10 went to the Perkins ville Four: Bobby Barnes, Bill Hartley, Jimmy West, and Ruth WiLs9n. Second prize of J5 was won by the Carolina Buddies of Todd: Warner Golds and Bobby Joe Norris. Third prize of $3 went to the Shackfords: Hilliard, Ginger Pol ly, and Jody. All three prize winners will ap pear on television at Johnson City, Tenn., with Homer Harris and the Mountain Music Makers. An entertaining show was pre sented by Homer Harris, the Music Makers, and the horse, Stardust, with" the Sffond half being devoted to the talent coi?? test. 23 Deep Gap Club Holds Meeting The Deep Gap Home Demon stration club met in the Steelnian Building May 4, with Mrs. J. H. Taylor as hostess. Most all of the members were present. The session carried an in thfr usual manner, with a special ar tical on food notes given by Mrs. John Miller. This being "Home Demonstra tion Week" everyone commented on the club and iti work, accom plishments and aspirations. Miss Mary Halen Neil gave a lesson on fabrics, the types, their uses and care, information which each member felt was useful. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Taylor. Makes Dean's List Wake Forest. ? Johnny Smith Barnett, a Wake Forest College senior from Boone, made the dean's list for the fall semester, as released by Dean Gaines Rog ers of the School of Business Ad ministration. Barnette is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Barnette of 200 Water Street. A minimum of a B average is required for the list. These students will receive special recognition at the gradua tion awards ceremony. Mac* Final Concert Is Given Wednesday By Local Bands The final concert of the Boone school bands was presented fast Wednesday evening before a large group of parents and friends In the Fine Arts Building of Ap palachian State Teachers College. The bands were under the direc tion of Mr. Roy R. Blanton and Mr. Noland. The three bands performing were the Beginners' Band, Junior Band, and the High School Band. After the concert the Band Par ents Association met and elected the following to its executive committee: Mrs. W. M. Matheson. Dr. C. R. Lawrence, Mrs. l>n Hagaman, Joe Minor, Mrs. F. M. Payne, Mrs. Gordon Winkler, Ralph Tugman, Mrs. Graydon Eggers, Major John Thomas and Dr. J. C. Yoder. Major Thomas was elected president of the association, and Mrs. Eggers will serve as secre tary and treasurer. Home, Garden Group Gathers The May meeting of the Home and Garden Department of the Worthwhile Woman's Club was held May 13 at'4:00 p. m. at the home of Mrs. D. L. Wilcox. Due to rain, the garden tour had to be cancelled. Mrs. Mae Miller presented a very helpful program on disease and insect control on flowering plants. Further plans were made for the church decoration project on June 13. Delicious refreshments were served by the hostesses, Mrs. Arnold Van felt, Mrs. John Hor ton, and Mrs. Wilcox. Book Club To . Hold Last Meeting The Veritas Book Club of Charlotte will hold its last meet ing of the 1953-1954 season in Blowing Rock on May 21. It will be a luncheon meeting in Four Kock Walls, the home of Dr. and Mrs. Vann M. Matthews. Mrs. C. H. Dry of Concord, is president of the club. The other officers are Mrs. Charles C. Lima, Jr., vice-president, Mrs. T. D. Newell, Jr., secretary, and Mrs. Reuben Hatcher, treasurer, all of Charlotte. Music, Art Group To Have Supper The Music and Art Department of the Worthwhile Woman's Club will hold its annual covered dish supper meeting for members and their husbands or a friend at the home of Mrs. Herman Wilcox at 135 Orchard Street, Friday even ing at 0:49 o'clock. The College Avenue Baptist Church was the scene of a brilliant asd beautiful wedding Saturday evening May 8, at eight o'clock when Miss Gwyn^oly Olivia Triplett became the bride of John Spencer Con way. Rev. M. O. Owens, pastor of the First Baptist church, officiat ed. The impressive double ring ceremony was used. The church was effectively de corated with mass arrangements of calla, lillies, peonies, snap dragons and mock orange blos soms in tall standards. The choir (ail was outlined with a rope of rhododendron interspersed with glamelias. An arch and tall white standards entwined with ivy holding lighted cathedral tapers and palms of Oregon fern made the background for the vows. Calla lillies tied with fern mark ted the pews for special guests. A program of nuptial music was presented by Miss Patricia Roberts, organist; Mrs. O. I.. Moore, pianist; and Mrs. T. L. Cashwell, Mrs. Ed Schell, Mrs. Robert Correll, Mr. George Kirs ten, and Mr. Harper Beall, Jr., vocalists. The traditional wedding march es were used and Miss Roberts played very softly "Bless Be The Tie" as the benediction. The bride entered the church with her father. The bridegroom had as his best man his grandfather, Avery Spen cer. Miss Ernestine Cottrell, class mate of the bride of Meredith College, Raleigh, was maid of honor. Matron of honor was Mrs. Willard Wilson, sister of the bride, of Memphis, Tennessee. The bridesmaids were Mrs. M. L. Justice Miss Lynda Bowman, cousins ot the bride; Mrs. Joe Hoyle, Mrs. Edward Perdue, and Miss Mary Jennings Spainhour of Lenoir and Miss Louise McCall of Lenoir and Meredith College, Raleigh. Diane Dalton, little daughter of.Mj. and Mrs. Bruce A. Dalton of Lenoir, waj flower girl. Groomsmen were Willard Wil son', brother-in-law of the bride, of Memphis, Tenn.; Bruce Chest er of Raleigh, Bob McConnell of Boone; Wells McConnell of Mt Holly; Joe Hoyle, J. W. Engle, uncle of the bridegroom, Harris Smith, and Jerry Estep, brother of the bridegroom of Lenoir. The bride's gown was a Jen nie Prince original of imported rosepoint lace and tulle over skinner satin, In bridal white. It was fashioned with a fitted lace bodice featuring a lovely scollop ed decolette neckline embrbider ed with imported iridescent sequins. The long lace sleeves ended in point*, over the hands and were fastened with tiny sat in covered buttons. The very full laces kirt was waltz length with scalloped edge. The underskirt was designed with dainty tulle fuffles extending to the floor. The lace skirt, falling gracefully open in the back, revealed the tulle ruffles cascading i nto a cathedral train. Mrs. Triplett, mother of the brijle, wore an original design of imported aqua Chantilly late over taffeta, handsomely embroidered with iridescent sequins. Long white gloves and a shoulder bou quet of white orchids completed her costume. Mrs. Estep, mother of the bridegroom, was beautifully gowned in orchid chantilly lace with a stole of matching tulle. She wore lace mitts and -a purple orchid bouquet. Mrs. Avery Spencer, grand mother of the bridegroom, wore a handsome gown of lilac lace with a purple orchid bouquet. Following the wedding cere mony Mr. and Mrs. K. M. Estep entertained at a wedding recep tion at their home on Pennton Avenue. Later in the evening Mr. and Mrs. Conway left on a wedding trip to point of interest through out the northern states. At the conclusion of the trip they will en-plane for Santa Barbara, California. For traveling the bride wot* an attractive Sidney Kramer ori ginal costume dress in powder blue brocade raatlasse. The bodice of the dress was enhanced with a beautiful design of rhinestones, cut beads, and pearls. The same jeweled design was used on the collar of the matching jacket. And rew Triplet! of Lenoir. She gra duated from the Lenoir City schools and until her marriage attended Meredith College, in Raleigh. The bridegroom is the son of Mrs. K. M. Estep and the late John Jefferson Conway. He gra duated from the Lenoir City schools and attended State Col lege in Raleigh. He is now an airman third class witfl the Army Air Force. He expects immediate overseas duty and will serve as a personal specialist. Mr. Conway will be attached to the Japanese Defense Command at the John son Air Force Base near Tokyo, Japan.
