Some 30, 000 selected Balsam Fir and Red Spruce trees, their trunks mark ed with yellow paint to indicate that they have been approved for cutting, will be sold to dealers from half a dozen states. The Christmas tree forests are along the newly paved Forest Service road connecting with Highway 281, 12 miles from Bakersvllle. Roan Mountain, an enormous plateau covered with grassy mea dows, rhododendron and ever greens, offers magnificent vistas of the Blue Ridge mountains and of Mount Mitchell, highest peak east of the Mississippi (6,844 feet). Summer spent September in the North Carolina mountain! this year, with the reault that there has been no frost to cause pre mature turning of the leave*. On the Blue Ridge Parkway -just south of Cumberland Knob, the ground color ii bright with maples and black gum. Maples are bright in the camp and trailer areas of Doughton Park, largest recrea tional area on the Parkway, and just north of Blowing Rock there is a spectacular contrast between the green of pines and the yellow of birches. App High Homecoming Was Gay Event Here Appalachian High homecoming began with a parade Friday af ternoon. After the parade ichool was dismissed and everyone went to his respective place. To some this was home to prepare for the game, to some it was the gym to decorate for the dance, to others the football field to decorate it, while still others gathered mater ial for the bon tire which was held with two pep meetings just before the game. The ball game between the Blue Devils and Taylorsville be gan at 7:00 o'clock. Appalachian defeated Taylorsville 25-0. After the ball game alumni, teams, bands, and students were invited to the Homecoming dance sponsored by the student council. The Homecoming king and queen Randy Maddux and Thelma Phil lips reigned over the dance. The king and queen are chosen by popular vote of the itudent body after each homeroom hat nominated one king and one queen. The following were no minated for king and queen this year: King: Randy Madux, Buddy McGuire, Tony Winkler, David McKinney, Jerry Weit, Richard Greer, Bill Lyom, Roger Cook, and Dean Johnson. Queen: Thelma Phillip*, Min nie Austin. Elizabeth Hagaman, Ruby Hartley, Barbara Winkler, Betsy Rogers, Betty Swain, and Mary White. A total of 1,918,000 pounds of butter was manufactured in North Carolina in 1953, compared with the 1,264,000 pounds pro duced a year earlier. Facilities include 61 picnic tables, 30 fire places, 12 sites for trailer camp ing and 17 sites for tent camping; Reached by hard-topped roads connecting with U. S. 19 at Bry son City, Deep Creek Camp ground gives access to 4S miles of trout waters and a network of maintained trails through a rug gedly beautiful Park area which includes a 38,000-acre stand of virgin forest' and three water falls. Opening of the Deep Creek site brings the number of de veloped camp grounds on the North Carolina side of the Park to three, all of which can be reached by automobile. The oth er two are Smokemont, on U. S. Highway 441 near Cherokee, and Balsam Mountain camp grounds near Heintooga Overlook, reach ed from U. Autumn Theme ^ i Woman's Qub Autumn was the theme of the program of the Friday Afternoon Club on Friday. October 8, when Mrs H. J. Hardin, Mr*. Ronda Hardin, and Mr*. Grady Farth ing were hosteue* at their home on Willie* bi>ro Road. Mr*. J. D. Rankin gave two reading*, "How the Old North State Wa* Made." and "October in -Carolina"; Mr*. Frank Payne read a teasonal poem, "Fail I* Getting Mighty Cloac"; Mr*. D. J. Whitener *ang three number*. "Smiling .Through," "Be the Be*t Whatever You Are," and "Three Little Chestnuts"; and Mr*. J?me* Story gave a most entertaining and informative account of her lummer in Denver, Colorado, where Mr. Story did work on hlfc doctorate at the University of Colorado. Mn. Austin South preaided over the business session, and follow ing the social hour, the hoitesies, assisted by Mrs. Hooper Hendrix and Mrs. Whitener, served a salad course with hot rolls and coffee, followed by a dessert in the autumn motif.
