Local Debate Team In Contest With Empry U. Debate coach Leo K. Pritchett, and the women'* debate team from Appalachian State Teacher* Col lege. returned Sunday from Em ory University where the team par ticipated in the Weat Point Elim ination tournament. Misses Joanne Aldridge of Boone and Jeanna foffey of Hudson en tered the tournament and debated both sides of the ^estion, "Resolv ed. That the United State* should extend diplomatic recognition to the communist government of China." The top teams in the entire Southeast were entered in the tournament. The Appalachian team was chosen to participate by vir tue of having won the women's championship of the South Atlan tic Forensic Tournament recently. In Atlanta the ASTC represen tatives held nine debates, as each team in the tournament debated every other team. They debated one hour on the affirmative side, and the next hour on the negative side. ? Their competition included the University of Miami, former national champions (whom, inci- . dentally, Appalachian defeated). I University of Alabama, Wake For- . est, University of South Carolina, David Lipscomb College, Univer sity of Kentucky, Memphis State ? College, Howard University. B 52 JET BOMBERS The Air Force has announced that it will begin late this spring to equip one of its Strategic Air Command wings with B-52 bomb ers, which are capable of deliver ing hydrogen bombs to faraway targets at high speed and at high sltitud'e. The program will be at follow*: WILLIAM SPENCER Band Director "Symphony In B flat" 1st move ment, by Paul Kaurhet. an original band composition which really makea full use of the band'* rich color. Written in 1926 and first performed in America in 1933, this first symphony for band is music of unusually high calibre. I-eroy Anderson has done it again ? this time "Bugler's Holiday" for cornet trio and band. For those of you that enjoyed such numbers as "Sleigh Ride" and "Blue Tango," this will be refreshing music. Another original band composi tion "Sequoia" by Hornet C. La Gassey pictures the granduer and beauty of the giant redwood trees located in California. "Psalm for Band" by Vincent Persichetti, who is head of the composition depart ment of the Philadelphia Conser vatory, was first performed in 1992. The Psalm vu selected by the CBDNA convention in 19R as one of the eight most outstanding compositions written (or band in the la?t several years The second half of the program will feature music on the lighter side Starting with a Mexican novelty "Hey, Pedro!" the band will take you to South of the bor der with Sambas, Rhumbas, and other Latin-American rhythms. Mamie Dishman Taken By Death Mamie Carolyn Dishman, 12-year old daughter of Mr. a^d Mrs. Lewis 1. Dishman. of Keese, died March 8 in Baptist Hospital at Winston Salem, following an illness of six months. Funeral services were held at 2 p. m. Thursday, March 10. at the Timber Ridge Baptist Church, con ducted by the Rev. Carl Wilson and the Rev. R C. Payne. Burial i was in the Greene cemetery. Surviving besides the parents are two sisters, Norma and Phyllis, of the home. Marciano and Cockell have sign ed for a 15-rounder in May.
