to reinove the statute book* ?

It amended and then pa??ed and
sent to the Senate ? measure
which would make the punishment
for killing a person in a duel the
same as the punishment for first
| degree murder? death unless the
I jury should recommend life Im
prisonment.
A measure to make the crime
of unoa? setting fire to an oc
cupied dwelling? punishable by
Mfe imprisonment, however, ran
into more opposition. The bill was
approved on second reading by
33-32 and remains on the calendar
for third readlnf consideration to
morrow. Under present law, the
punishment for arson is death un
less the jury should recommend
life imprisonment.
At the start of the 19th week of
the legislative session, the House
members returned to Raleigh
early to begin work on a heavy
calendar. They held their first
Monday afternoon meeting of the
current session and recessed un
til 8 p. m. when the Senate also
will be in action.
Also spproved by the House and
sent to the Senate was a measure
which would permit any two or
more subdivisions of the state,
counties or cities, to join the crea
tion of authorities. These authori
ties would have the power to build
and maintain water o^ sewer sys
tems. Several counties and cities
in the Piedmont area are backing
the legislation in the hope it will
allow them to provide stand-by
water supplies for use in time of
water shortage.
