BARDEN The marriage of Miss Martha Caroline Witherspoon of Hickory and the Reverend Lawrence Edgar ton Barden of Boone was solemniz ed at four o'clock Saturday after noon, June second, in the First Methodist Church of Hickory. Dr. I. Elwood Carroll, pastor of the bride, and Dr. John O. Barden, Father of the bridegroom, officiat ed. The double ring ceremony was Followed by the dedication and communion service. Preceding the wedding * pro gram of nuptial music was render ed by Mrs. Glenn Miller and Mrs. Ned Armstrong, vocalists, and Mrs. Vena Little Goode, organist. The organ numbers consisted of "Ariose" by Hadnel, "My Heart Ever Faithful", "Urge" by Handel. "0 Promise Me", "Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee" and "I Love rhee " The vocal numbers consist ed of "I Love You Truly", 'Through The Years", and "O Perfect Love". "I Would Be True" was played aoftly throughout the tervice. The traditional weddtmg inarches were used. The bride wis given in marriage by her father, Marvin H. .Wither ipoon. She was attended by Mrs. Steve Shuford of Hickory ai mat ron of honor, Mrs. Wad* H. Shu Ford. Jr. of Hickory. Mr*. Bichard McGimaey of North Wilkeiboro, and Mia* Marjorie Spenae of Siler City, cousin of th* bride. All the ittendanta wore identical floor length towns of blue lac* and By Ion tulle with matching headpieces if flower* and tulle. They carried bouquets of pink carnations. Best man for th* bridegroom was bis brother, Milton B. Barden of Boone. Ushers were the Reverend W Warren Biahop of Bynum, Ro bert W. Morgan of Farmville and Durham, Roy C. Hillard of Middle ?ex, John B. Barrett of Greenville, cousin of the bridegroom, and Har aid Witherspoon of Hickory, broth sr of the bride. The ring bearer was Master JohR L Pippin, Jr., cousin of the bride groom. He wore a white linen wit ind carried the rings oi\ a white latin pillow. The bride's gown was fashioned d <t imported lace and nylon tulla and had a snug fitting bodice fea turing a portrait neckline and long ileeve*. The full bouffant skirt had a sunburst design of lace from the waistline to near the hem of the Lull* floor-length skirt. Her finflar tip-length veil of French illusion was attached to a semi-cap of lace. Surrounding th* white orchid in th* bridal bouquet were white ?ee f*. ? The bride's mother wore a street length drpw of blue lace with srhite acceaaories and a whit* or chid ceraage. The bridegroom's mother wore a dress of ro*? lac* aver taffeta with pink end white teeesaories and a purple erekld Following the ceremony the bride's parent* entertained at a reception in the church social hall The wedding preceded by two days the couple's graduation front Duke University, Monday. Mr. Bar lea received the Bachelor of Divinity decree while Mrs. Barden received the Matter of Religions education decree. The brhte, the only daughter of Mr and Mrs. Marvin H. Wither. She has been Director of Christian Education at the First Methodist Church in North Wilkesboro, and for the past four months, a teacher in the Hick ory High School. Mr. Barden, the son of Dr. John Glenn Barden and Mrs. Barden, is a Duke 'University graduate and ? member of the Phi Kappa Sigma social fraternity. For the past year he has served as chief housemast er of tli? Fresbraah Dormitories. For five y*ara he sang in the Duke University Glee Club, and was a member *f the Duke Band. Last summer he served as assistant pastor of the Dilworth Methodist Church in Charlotte. He is a mem ber of the Western North Carolina Conference. Branched candelabra holding white taper*, palm itandi, and baaket* of white gladiolu* and white California king-aiter* were used to decorate the church. A program of wedding music was presented by Mr*. Ctuter Wal lace of Boone, organiit; and Mn. James A. Greene of Boone, vocal ist. The bride, who was given In marriage by her uncle, David Love of Winston-Salem, wore a waltz length gown of chantilly lace and nylon tulle, full bouffant ikirt fashioned with a scalloped hem line, fitted bodice designed with a peter-pan collar and long sleeves ending in eala point*. Her waist line veil of illuiion fell from a half crown of chantilly lace and baby aeed pearl*. She carried a prayer book topped with a white orchid and tiny (treameri of white latin ihowered with fleur d'amour, Mr*.
