The Boone Junior Woman's Club
held its first meeting of 1996-57
Thursday evening, July 5th, at the
home of Mrs. Robert Congleton on
Winkler's Creek Road. The new
president, Mrs. Bill Carpenter,
presided. Mrs. Howard Williams
reported on plans for the annual
Flower Show to be held in August,
and Mrs. Congleton told the club
of plans for a benefit bridge to be
held the latter part of July.
Mrs. Greer Hodges, program
chairman, presented Mayor Gor
don Winkler, who gave a very en
lightening talk on the budget of
our community, which was follow
ed by discussions of various civic
matters.

Ernest E. McGuire married Min
nie H. King in Mable, N. C., June
14, 1800, and moved to the Cav
endish area in the spring of 1902.
They have lived there since and
have been engaged in farming and
cattle raising.
Mr., McGuire was overseer for
the roads in that area until form
ation of the old North Fork High
way District in 1909. He then
served as district highway director
until 1924. Roads built under his
supervision include the Cavendiah
grade, Peck grade, Freeman Creek
grade, and many others.
Mr. McGuire has been Demo
cratic precinct committeeman since
1918 and Mrs. McGuire has backed
him all the way. She is well-known
lor her outgoing personality and
friendly mann?r.
The main recreation for Mr.
McGulra la hunting with hia var
ioua hounds, and he baa become
widely known In thia area tor his
ability to bag cougar, lynx cata,
coyotea and other wild anlmala. He
followed thia ^vocation nearly ev
ery free day,, winter and summer,
until he broke his foot while gath

1 clove garlic, split
1 tablespoon shortening

H cup diced celery
% pound (2 med.) tomatoes
% cop uncooked rice /
cups. fresh or frozen peas
2 tablespoon! minced parsley
1 V4 teaspoons salt
14 teaspoon pepper

Remove bone and excess fat
from meat and cut into small
cubes or slices.
Brown meat and garlic la
heated ahortening in large skillet.
Remove garlic. Add onions and
celery and cook 6 minutes longer,
stirring frequently to prevent
overhrowning.
Remove skin from tomatoes and
cut into small pieces. Add to Aeat.
Bring to a boil. Lower heat; cover
and simmer slowly for about SO
minutes, or until meat is tender.
Add remaining Ingredients in
order listed. Again bring, pactum
to a boil and lower heat Cover
and simmer about 20 minute*, or
