More Garden ' Sass Needed "Some expansion in production of vegetable* ihould be advised for 1997," aayi F D. Cochran. Head of the Department of Horticulture at North Carolina State College. He indicate* that increased contract acreages in snap beans, cucumbers for pickles, and peppers for pro cessing are desired. However, Cochran warns that fresh market competion in general will be keen. Cochran sayi that over a five to 10 year period, there are good possibilities for expansion in veg etable and fruit production In North Carolina, provided a few important developments take place. Specifically. Cochran believes there must be improvements in product ivity, stability of production, and increased marketing efforts. Indicating that there la no cur rent shortage of these crops for the fresh market except on a sea sonal basis, Cochran believes, how ever, that the per capita consump tion of fruits and vegetables is in creasing. ' When this fact is con sidered, along with the expected increase in population, ia it esti mated that an increase in produc tion of about 41 per cent will be needed by 1B73, he adds. Cochran believes that generally the yields of these crops are much too low. The yields, quality, and production stability can be greatly improved by more extensive use of supplemental ">n, proper control of insects and diseases. Farmers should be informed that vegetable growing and mar keting is a very exacting business. i>ays Cochran. It is not well suited to tenant type farming and small acreages. He believes that trend it toward large acreages that can be mechanized and sold in large volume. For, adds Cochran, con centration of production in large volume is ncded to attract process ing plants. Genersl was up 8.6, classified 2.0 snd retail 2 per cent. Automotive was off 11 per cent. INFLATION HITS FINES Aberdeen, Miss.—The fine for parking overtime in this northeast Mississippi town has been hit by inflation. It used to be a nickel but at the beginning of 1957, was raised to 25 cents. fertilization and the Fashion Notes Stay ditching is a* important part of construction (or home rowers It U recommended by al moat all pattern -companies, the term refers to a line of regular machine stitching done through the tingle layer of material one half inch inside the aeam allow ance of a garment section. Matching thread and an ordin ary length of stitch ten to fifteen stitches to the inch are used for stay stitching. It is done wherever the cutting line is off grain on curved and shaped edges, slanted shoulder lines, the "neckline opening and armholes. The underarm seams of a bodice also need a line of stay stitching. So does the waistline of a skirt, especially if it is a circu lar skirt Some experts like a row of stay stitching on the side seams of a skirt for from seven to nine inches dowi| It should go far enough to take care of the hip curve. Stay stitching prevents a gar ment section from stretching out of shape as you work on it. It ia a big help to a well-styled gar ment. Without it, there is apt to be a poor fit The stitching sh9uld be done from the widest part .of the gar ment piece to the narrowest. Thus, it goes from shoulder to the cen ter front oij the neckline, from shoulder to underarm at the arm hole, and from underarm to waist line on a bodice. You should always handle your garment as little as possible dur ing the making to be sure of a fresh, new look. You will notice how stay-stitched sections seem to have more body. When choosing a pattern, find a style you are sure will be be coming. If necessary, try on a ready-made dress with similar lines. If you are just beginning to sew—don't buy costly fabric, and dont tray a pattern with odd and unusual necklined or draped skirt. Termites nest in the ground and travel up to wood in order to feed. Control consists of blocking this connection between wood and ground, either mechanically or New Items Add To Your Home There are many new items to nuke the home more attractive to the eyu.
