Parkway Ruckus
Is Now Settled
Manteo, April IS.—The highway
cornmiiwion today formally ended
what at one time waa a lively
ruefcus over location of the Blue
Ridge Parkway in the Grandfather
Mountain area.
When the commission announced
several years ago its plans for
routing of the parkway in the
Grandfather area, they brought
anguished yelps from Hugh Morten
of Wilmington, owner of the
mountain and operator of a popular
tourist attraction thert.
Morton protested that the proposed
location would ruin Grandfather
as a tourist attraction. Objections
by Morton and others in
area caused the commission to
reconsider the.routing in the area.
The commission brought a formal
end to the ruckus at a meeting
here today when it deeded back
to Morton and Miss Florence Boytl
land which it had acquired through
condemnation for the original
routing. No money changed hands
because the state had never reached
a settlement with Morton and
Miss Boyd on the price.
At Raleigh,, the highway commission's
Federal Park Engineer
R. Getty Browning said that "studies
are being made through that
locality'to determine the final location
of the parkway."
