For aeveral weeks, the Internal Revenue staff has been checking its records of returns against public license and registration records and other information items. Many toads to unreported tax liabilities hate been developed by this comparison Mr. Sanders said, "Even though our field forces are constantly alert to detect unreported tax liabilities at a part of their day-to-day activities, the results of this check indicate the need for an organized and systematic canvass of the entire district to make certain that all citizens and residents who are liable for federal taxes of the various classes are filing returns and paying the taxes due." During the next four weeks, enforcement officers of the Internal Revenue Service will devote their entire time exclusively to this assignment, and will call on taxpayers who have not filed required returns. Mr. SandelB urged all persons and firms falling in this category to tabulate .information and file returns for which they are liable. He urged all who have questions regarding liability and those who need assistance to contact a collection officer at the nearest Internal Revenue office.' FREAK ACCIDENT Westport, Conn.—A rock, the size of a softball, smashed through a window and hit Mrs. Harry Hammerman on the h$ad. The rock had flown 270 feet from a construction site when dynamite used 46 blast a hole for a drainage ditch, was set off. Mrs. Hammerman had t» be treated by a doctor. Parkway Ruckus Is Now Settled Manteo, April IS.—The highway cornmiiwion today formally ended what at one time waa a lively ruefcus over location of the Blue Ridge Parkway in the Grandfather Mountain area. When the commission announced several years ago its plans for routing of the parkway in the Grandfather area, they brought anguished yelps from Hugh Morten of Wilmington, owner of the mountain and operator of a popular tourist attraction thert. Morton protested that the proposed location would ruin Grandfather as a tourist attraction. Objections by Morton and others in area caused the commission to reconsider the.routing in the area. The commission brought a formal end to the ruckus at a meeting here today when it deeded back to Morton and Miss Florence Boytl land which it had acquired through condemnation for the original routing. No money changed hands because the state had never reached a settlement with Morton and Miss Boyd on the price. At Raleigh,, the highway commission's Federal Park Engineer R. Getty Browning said that "studies are being made through that locality'to determine the final location of the parkway." Boone FT A Has Final Meeting The Boone Parent Teacher Association held its last meeting of the year Monday evening in the High School Auditorium with election of officers and followed by an iaformative program on high school curriculum and policies. The following officers were elected for next year: Dr. F. Ray Derrick, president Mrs. T. S. Bartlett, vice-president; Mrs. Jerry Coe, secretary; and Major John Thomas, treasurer. Major Thomas reported on the PTA fence project. He said the fence was installed at • cost of $090. As of Tuesday noon all of this amount except $35 had been raised.
