In a given area, who wish to Join together is a conservation program that benefits the entire area, tome districts are composed of several counties, otherweneou jpaas a given walershe? while others operate as county units. The Watauga Soil Conservation District is a' one county unit. ' Soil Conservation Districts are governed by three supervisors that are elected by local farmers. These supervisors serve for three year term*. To keep two exper ienced persons in office at all times, the terms are staggered with one supervisor elected each year. The supervisors operate under the laws of the State of North Carolina to plan and carry out the soil and water conservation pro gram in their district. These sup ervisors plan their program of goo0 land use and rely upon the assistance of all agencies that are dealing with soil and water con servation to assist them in carry ing out their program. S. Department of Agriculture before Soil Conservation Service personnel are aasigned to work in the district. Since Soil Conserva tion Districts are operated as a sub-division of State government, they are not controlled by any federal organization; but are only responsible to the people of the district, who elect them as their representatives.
