Staff photoa by Joe Minor Forty-Eight Calves Sold At Hereford Show, Sale Forty-eight calves were told In the 16th annual Watauga Here ford Brooder* Association Pure bred Show and Sale in Boone Sat urday for 18,707.80, an average of $183.28 per head Twelve bull calves brought $2,769.00 for an average of *23041 per head. Thir ty-six heifers brought *6,032 50 for an average of *167.87 per head. The show was one of the "best attended" in years, according to B. W. Stallinga, president of the sponaoring association, with an es timated crowd of 800 attending. They came to the show, which started at 10 a. m., and stayed through the sale that laated on up into mid-afternoon. , The champion bull, Plato Paladin 88, was shown by Mr. and Mrs. H. Grady Farthing of Trailway Farms, Boone. Allen Jenkins of Mountain City, Tenn., bought him for (388.80. The reserve champion bull, CH Royal Triumphant, shown by Coun cil Henaon of Vilas, was sold to Lyle B. Cook of Boone for 8338.00. Both bulls were calved in Novem ber of last year. John Dogger, Vllai, showed MIm Royal Larry far the cham pion cow. She sold for 1245.04 to John Winkler of Sugar Grove. The reserve champion cow, CH Lady Princess, shown by Mr. Hen son, was sold to R. C. Qreene of Blowing Rock for (180.00. Miss Royal Larry calved in September 1997, and CH Lady Princess in March of this year. Largest purchasers were Boyd Huffman of Hickory, who pur chased nine head for $1,397.50, and Austin Leatherman of New ton, who purchased eight head for $1,412.50. Tuckwiller, Watauga county agent, served as sales man ager. Several prominent cattle asso ciation figures were present for the show and sale. Also present were H. D. Ques senberry of the N. C. Department of Agriculture, and Bob Beard, editor of Farmers Federation News. Mr. SUIllngs, in expressing his pleasure at the big turn-out to the event, said the local Here ford breeders association felt "honored that these leaders In national and state organisations were present."
